Put a suede steering wheel in an open-topped car when you’re planning on driving through sand and dirt in hot, sweat-inducing temperatures. Stop on in to see where two hours of svending got me

Ugh. It feels so great in hand... 1,000,000x better than leather. When it’s clean. I figure if I spend an hour cleaning it every day for the next few months I may be able to enjoy a week of perfect suede before it’s filthy again.

I’m sorry my friend, but suede has no place in an automobile.

I really want to disagree with this.

But then I look at the mess that is my old steering wheel

Step one: get a wood rimmed steering wheel.

Step two: enjoy

Step three: enjoy more

I’m hoping I can find a suitable wooden wheel to fit my E34 soon. I love the feel of wooden steering wheels compared to leather. She’d is cool but mostly for headliners lol

It’s not bad as a headliner or for the dash in a track car

One of my friends has a motto: “never use a suede covered steering wheel with bare hands”.

I wanted to go with Suede with my Autozam wheel, but then I read up on it, and I don’t wear gloves when I drive, on top of me not keeping my cars as pristinely clean as I should, steered me towards regular leather.

I almost brought that exact steering wheel (but a clean one ;)) but suede always sends shivers down my spine to touch... Looking good though.

Yeah, the wood Momo wheel I put in my Galant is something I’ll be missing for a while. But I’m not about to get rid of my E90s, airbags, and radio controls in favor of a 50s designed racing steering wheel.

It’s rough. I think if I hadn’t used it on super dusty mid-summer forest service roads it would have been fine with occasional light cleaning.

How’s the Autozam? Still love it?

Headliner I will concede. Dash is still a big nope in my book. That’s too much surface area to clean regularly and it’s too visible to ignore.

I think of it like this. My wife and I once got to our hotel, checked in, and found thick black hairs all over the white sheets when I pulled them back, as if a large greek man had rolled around in them. Seeing that matted wheel would be similar for me, or like knowing I bought a car from an avid nudist and spread luminol on the seats to see everywhere his bodily fluids and been deposited.

That sounds like quite the dusty trail!

The Autozam is still great. I haven’t had much opportunity to drive it lately though. Winter still lingers on here and will probably stay that way until may. I did manage to get a 300mm Momo Wheel for it and installed it. Much more comfortable. I also picked up some new shoes for it so I can ditch the studded mud and snows.

I agree and I would only ever do the headliner but I’ve seen it in crazy lambos and an ls e36 m3 track car and in those instances they’re crazy enough cars that I’m totally down with it

Okay, given that there is nothing else practical about those cars, why should the upholstery be? I’ll allow it.
