In page five of their brochure, Toyota describes the engine in the Corolla Hatch as the “all-new 168 hp 2.0 liter Dynamic Force Engine”.

Now all we need is a curb weight.

I was really hoping for more than that

And all the news outlets were screaming OMG NEW COROLLA HOT HATCH !11!!! MANUAL!1!!!
Toyota never said it was a hot hatch, and you could always get the Corolla with a manual

If it’s under 2900lbs, that is still a pretty fun recipe. My Matrix XRS is taller, longer, and only has a little more power (but it’s all up top). If this car has a relatively broad power band and can hit the 2700lb mark it should be pretty fun. My biggest concern is if you can toggle on/off all the safety bullshit (lane departure warnings, traction control, etc) and also toggle the auto rev-match on the manual trans.

Exactly. If I’m looking at this car it would be replacing a 117hp Honda Fit...I’m looking for a regular car that can haul stuff and have some fun on the side. 168hp and 6 speed means that I can get better highway comfort and not give up much on the fun side.

Fits are pretty awesome too though. Great chassis.

But did you really expect it? Pretty normal for this class of car

I’m very happy with mine, but I do way more highway driving than I thought I was going to when I bought it, and turning at 3500rpm for hours gets old. I’m not really in the market for a new vehicle, but if Toyota is going to put out a hatchback with an NA engine and clean-sheet 6MT in it...I may feel an obligation to put my money where my mouth is in terms of the cars I want companies to keep making.

More than the current skyactiv 2.0, but less than the upcoming skyactiv X. Knowing Toyota the nannies will keep you from having too much fun and overall it’ll be tuned for middle of the road please as many as possible.
When it’s time for a new ride I’ll check it out because it looks pretty good and I know it won’t let me down reliability wise. Right now? The Mazda 3 is still on top.

Supposed to be a very efficient engine too (bonus). Thermal efficiency above 40%!

For what it’s worth, I test drove a SkyActiv Mazda3 when I bought the Fit. I was not particularly impressed. The 2.5 is nice (a friend has one) but if I care that little about fuel economy I should probably just go get a GTI.

Some of the press were referring to it as a hot hatch but it is still Toyota so I’m not shocked but was hoping for more.

I just have the 2.0 but it’s more than enough for my driving. I drive a lot for work so mpg is more of a concern than power.

Probably gotta be over 200 hp and tuned for sporty to be hot hatch territory these days I’d think.
