How much will this cost?

In the grim darkness of the near future, such a car repair will cost $40k.
Where is that gauge cluster from?

half a used 500e.

and cheap now!

This is actually kind of a neat cluster design. All of your important information is front and center. Look up, see the road. Look down, see your speed and tach.

There’s a good chance you’d come out ahead trading it in on something boring. But then that’s less fun.

Hopefully not much. We need more 500s around here.

I’m not doing boring again, I promise you that.

Hm, one of your time circuits must be going out. That’s why 12:41pm is unavailable. (Good thing it wasn’t your flux capacitor.) Try selecting another destination time.

I do rather like it. I usually have it set to display mph as a number as well, but it was in the middle of a dissertation on all of the warning lights (Check Stop Lamps Have Engine Checked Hill Start Unavailable Stability Control Unavailable)

It’s an Alfa/Mclaren/Maserati/Fiat dealer. Either you’re correct because *cough* UNRELIABLE so they’ll make money anyway, or you’re incorrect because luxury tax.

This pains me because I’d love an Abarth, but they scare the hell out of me.

Fix it again Tony. $590 minimum.

Why do I have the feeling that all of those problems are related to one sensor?
![]() 04/03/2018 at 23:44 |
|
It has been 100% reliable for the last 4 years/62k miles (and probably the first two years of its life as well). I will certainly keep you guys posted if my opinion of it changes. I don’t think there’s much else this fun that doesn’t have its own problems.

I honestly suspected just an oxygen sensor prior to it refusing to start. It felt like something fuel flow related, but i didn’t get a chance to dig into it.

Hill start, stability control and brake lights are all braking/ABS. None of which should keep the car from starting though.

I think I’ve maybe figured out the issue. Faulty brake switch at the pedal — I assume the car won’t let you start it without the brake pedal being depressed?
I’ve never even sat in an Abarth. Shooting from the hip here. But if you need your brakes on to start the car, I’m damn close.

more than the car is now worth.

Hoping it’s something simple - love these things!
![]() 04/04/2018 at 06:40 |

That many things all at once? Well, it’s one of three things, listed from most likely to least likely:
1) Bad ground. Is this a 2012? They are known for a specific bad ground mount. Try the one down by the gas pedal. Alternatives to this are a blown fuse, or a break in the connector for the throttle. Apparently not having the throttle pedal connected causes all manner of Merry Hob with these cars.
2) Bad sensor. This could also cause a ground fault, depending on how bad it’s gone. You may have a broken wire leading to a bad ground, causing this.
3) Computer malfunction. As in you need a new one of those.
4) Something entirely different...
My money is on the first one, with that many things going off at once. I hope it’s that one...

If manual, you just need the clutch depressed, not the brake. If auto, the brake.

You know, one hears a lot about the unreliability of the 500, but I’m not seeing it. They do a lot of weird things, though. Like the general “Something has gone wrong!” light that looks all menacing, until you see that it’s just that the license plate lamp has shaken loose. Mine has 60k miles now, with 12k that I’ve put there, and it’s been just fine.

This. 100% this.
![]() 04/04/2018 at 08:27 |

Yeah the light is a brake light that needs replaced, totally unrelated to whatever is wrong!
![]() 04/04/2018 at 09:10 |

The check engine I suspected was oxygen sensor or something fuel flow related, based on some weird driving quirks for a few days before it came on. I don’t know if the rest of the issues are a second problem or what. I pulled into Qdoba and the dash lit up, and when I tried to leave it wouldn’t start. The sounds it was making when not starting are not fuel flow related sounds, but I don’t know if the computer has flipped out and it all started there after all.
![]() 04/04/2018 at 09:15 |
|
Nah, no need for brakes to start it, just clutch. If it hadn’t quit starting it wouldn’t surprise me if the computer sensed fuel issues and notified of hill start and ESC problems as secondary but related issues, but the not starting was a surprise.

Any word on the FIAT issues?

Nothing yet. They said yesterday they were pretty booked (with the vehicles they sell, I’m hardly surprised.)

I’ll do an official update once I pick it up but...it was absolutely nothing. Just a minor mental breakdown from the computer. I knew I should’ve just disconnected the battery.
