I put 4 Bilstein shocks and some slightly taller than stock springs into my 4Runner about 18 months ago. Over that time I’ve done a lot of dirt road driving, probably thousands of miles, but very little proper off-roading. Maybe 2 or 3 times a summer I will have to slowly crawl over a rock feature or something that takes some planning and execution. Definitely not Raptor jumping anything.
I was driving down the highway the other day and heard a weird thumping. When I got to my destination I saw that the top nut, bushing and washer was missing from one shock. I waited for a new one to be delivered and installed it today.
The only thing I could think of is that the nut came loose, but it was a nylon locker with loctite and a ton of torque. There are no marks on the frame where it was rubbing, and the shock itself looked like a clean break. The remaining bushing looked like it was still holding the shaft centered in the frame hole, and anyone who’s tried to twist or break a shock shaft knows how tough they can be. It just seems to have snapped off.

sounds like it was either a defect (not unheard of on the 5100's) or overtorqued.

People with the mindset of “the tighter the better” are a special kind of danger with a spanner in their hands.
