Seen over the weekend... I’m still in shock! I can’t remember the last time I saw one in this condition, in PA no less!
If !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! are anything to go by, I believe this is an ‘84 in Bright Red with a Medium Red interior. It looks like ‘ !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ditched those optional wheels.
Funny thing, it makes the Cube seem not as special...

Classic car collecting but instead of air cooled 911s or numbers matching muscle cars it’s a bunch of unusually nice old shitboxes

If I had a ton of space and more spending money than I do, I’d consider doing this. You know a spotless 1987 ford tempo is probably rarer than most “normal” classics.

I love a good Tempo. I’m shocked that it isn’t 85% rust at this point considering it’s in PA.

How about a Classic Car Club Manhattan style outfit, but with pristine economy cars?
Count me in! Now we just need funding...

$10 you don’t see one as nice out west! $20 if you do and you bring it back!
It honestly tops the R32 GT-R that I saw on the road later in the day. I’d be willing to bet there are more R32 GT-Rs in PA (or possibly the country) than mint Tempos at this point.

So am I! It has current registration and emissions(!) to January 2019, too.
I’m suspicious that it is a one (elderly) owner car. It’s too nice to be anything else.

I found Ford Tempo Fanatic, too! (you remember him?) He posted on the front page about a month ago. I think it’s a sign, but for what, I don’t know...

Huh. So that’s where they got those weird windows on the XR4ti........

My guess is that it’s emissions exempt because it doesn’t hit the yearly mileage threshold.

I’ve owned two cars where 90HP was an optional engine that I didn’t get.

My better half’s mom is retired. She drives a 2015 Honda Fit and never has to have emissions on it because she drives so little.

I owned 2. A 92 and 93 both two door 5 speed 4 cyl. 1st and second cars way back in 98/00. I loved them!

That is wild! I saw a similarly impossibly clean early first gen Escort a couple years ago, and I damn near spit my coffee out when I laid eyes on it.

Yep, almost definitely an 84, for the wheels and the vertical rub strips on the bumper, which didn’t seem to carry much into MY 85. We had one of these in the family when I was a kid, and I studied the minutiae far too much. The thin side trim is also most likely 84.
The HSC with an automatic was amusingly slow, I am pretty sure the fintail can dust it in a 0-60 run.

I saw one of those a few years ago, too. My best find was still this though:
It’s even preserved on Google Street View, at least for now.
It always makes me happy to see things like these in fantastic condition.

It’s amazing how dated the ‘84 looks compared to the ‘85, and that’s even before they went to the composite headlights.
The 0-60 time is quoted as 13.9 seconds, so that’s the time to beat!

Hopefully both were more inspiring to drive than this Tempo!

I get a way bigger kick out of seeing something like these, than any exotic car.

The wheels and thin side trim really does it. Ours was a high option 85 GLX, with multi spoke wheels and thicker side trim, which made it look more modern. It also had accessory headlight covers - not composites, but kind of a semi-flush design, I’ve never seen another set.
The car was in the family until 1999, when it had 190K on it - used by a few kids, not exactly babied. It never had a mechanical issue, but had electronic quirks after about 120K, and at 190K, the front end was worn out. My mom sold it to a guy for $600 who wanted to fix it up for his kid. I had always kept it waxed, and it still looked decent.
The fintail can do it in 11-12 or so, and definitely feels faster.

The XR4ti (as the Ford Sierra in Europe) actually predates the Tempo by a year, so, the Tempo really got those windows from the XR4ti...

Wow! I once owned an 84 Topaz so this brings back memories!
Not really good memories, tbh - my most vivid image is of the car spitting out a half shafts as I merged onto I74 in Champaign IL. That, and the engine which basically sounded like a nest of angry bees.

If its anything like the Tempo my parents had when I was a kid, the time spent in the shop keeps it out of the weather for a good part of the year.

Especially considering I’m pretty sure the last Citation I remember seeing in PA was this one:
I think the picture quality dates this one pretty well.
Old, mint condition economy cars are probably more rare than the exotics sold at the time. It makes spotting them a fun challenge!

I think the last Citation I saw in person was in high school, like 20 years ago. It was in about that condition as well.
