I have to be just a little skeptical about some of those numbers, given the amount of phone holders I see on the eastside - it’s like every third “driver” sometimes. But I suppose it’s the thought that counts.

Austin outlawed handheld devices in cars and on bicycles a couple of years ago. They have since done patrols with cops riding in rush hour in metro buses so they can see down into the cars in traffic. If they see somebody on a device, they radio ahead to motor officers who pull the cars over.

This is statewide though.

When they had the grace period last year there were a ton of warnings issues. With insurance companies raising rates of those caught it’ll really help buckle down on the issue.

the lead pic (i know it’s stock) would be fine if it wasn’t for the fact that:

A. this guy would be spilling his soda everywhere
B. how the hell is this guy texting with his thumb on the central pad?
C. WHERE’S THE HOOD????

GA just passed a distracted driving law. It was a nice gesture, but the police departments don’t have the manpower to police it. Even if there wasn’t so many crimes to respond to, they could spend all day just pulling people over for expired tags or tailights being out, etc. In other words it’s pretty far down on the list of priorities. Unless they just happen to witness you make a traffic infraction caused by distracted driving between calls. They may set aside 1 day a year to focus on a crackdown (like they do with seatbelts), but that’s about all I expect out of it.

It’s a nice thought, but I don’t know. Sometimes I’d like an audit of those ticket claims - I remember similar stories about the left lane camper crackdown, yet every single time I am blessed with having to drive on 167 (and almost the same on 405 south of Bellevue), there’s a dawdler in the left lane.

Nobody uses Blackberries any more, therefore this story is fake news.
