Everything’s underground in most developed countries... But Japan is very archaic on many many things.

In towns and cities, some power lines, etc are underground here in Nova Scotia, but in the more rural areas, everything is above ground on poles (though not as insane looking as those in Japan...wow!)

Does mean we lose power sometimes during large hurricanes or winter storms though...

Lots of utilities are overhead in the US even in cities (except dense urban core) because underground is costly to install, and for electric it is very costly to maintain. Some local suburban neighborhoods are underground, but supply to those neighborhoods are overhead.

The utilities in the US have very clear agreements about clearances and positioning to safeguard their assets. It’s hard to believe that Japanese companies are concerned about protecting their lines when I see those pictures.

I’m not sure if it’s because archaic or because they’ve diverted the rivers underneath the cities, put in 5 or even 6 levels of subways, shopping centers, and they need the rest of the space for the Gundams/Evangelions.

Nah... Less than 10% of Tokyo has underground lines. They just go for the cheapest as long as it works... They want to burry more, it’s just expensive and they don’T want to spend the money.
