That it’s okay to buy control arm’s that cost as much as the cars worth. Namely these units with a serviceable ball joint. More after the jump.(also turbo picture because I never showed it)
While the Lexus was down for rear tires ,new radiator, spark plugs(read: tinkering) I noticed that there’s nearly a 1/3" play in the passenger lca. It’s amazing, enough that the wheel turns l/r on it’s own from lca play not the tie rod.(thanks dirt roads)
So the lca options are oem supra units which will cost around $800 for a set, no serviceable joint, and may bind on the lowered car with excessive angle.
Japspeed lca with hiem joints that are open to dirt and grime. They cost around $800 shipped, but look a tad flimsy for street use.
Figs units which will cost $1500 before taxes. But have high quality design and a serviceable joint.
The cars down until I make a decision, but just making this post tells me I want the figs more.
Now for janky turbos!

find OE ones and replace them. Its my plan for the GX. They want something like $500 an arm for the OE (retail), but I can find an OE set for that price. So what if the ball joint isn’t serviceable, its going to be a while.

Speaking from experience with heim joints on a street car, don’t buy heim joints for a street car. The maintenance isn’t terrible but every 6 months or so I have to wipe off the old grease and accumulated crud, spray them with WD-40, scrub them with a brush, then slather some more white lithium grease on them with rubber gloves.

I drive a dirt road daily, the balljoint won’t last long plus I’m worried that the lowered geometry had something to do with the premature wear.

very likely. with the GX I know you can punch out the factory ball and replace it with an aftermarket unit like a moog or preferable a Japanese 555. Is that an option?

I’d imagine you could get a serviceable ball joint from MOOG or someone and just have a shop or even machine shop press it in for you.

It’s not, people have tried but no one’s successfully done it.

It’s not possible with this lca, it will crack the only option is a brand new replacement if the balljoint fails.

On the LX they arent technically serviceable but you can get them out and back in. I believe its only recommended that you do it once though. I would be surprised if the GX wasnt the same. Have you check on ih8mud? they are a great resource for the GX

This is for a sc400, the arms are bespoke to sc’s, soarers, and mk4 supras. Balljoint replacement has been tried and is not possible, and this my second used set so that’s no longer an option. New arm’s are about $400 each for the supra(which is cheaper than the SC arms). At which point why not spend some more money on an arm with better geometry for a lowered vehicle and a serviceable balljoint.
