Yeah, I’m mostly limited to my phone these days and am not visiting Jalopnik anymore for this reason. Auto-playing videos, even when muted, eat data and memory, which makes the page slow to load and cumbersome to scroll. It’s bullshit.

AFAIK you’re limited to a few options:

- Install a browser that nukes them for you as part of a data compressor (Opera Mini.)

- Disable Javascript outright (breaks websites but at least allows you to view them.)

Short of playing with ad-blockers and browsers other than Safari, I don’t think you can. Or as winterlegacy noted you might be able to disable all Javascript, but then a lot of legitimate stuff will break. iOS is supposed to block autoplay by default when you are on a cellular data connection. The issue is that it only blocks the HTML5 “autoplay” tag. If a site is doing the autoplay using Javascript it gets through. Apple (and others) are combating some of this with updates, but ad vendors keep coming up with workarounds and it has basically turned into a game of whack-a-mole. If you’ve ever encountered one of those “FREE AMAZON GIFT CARD” popups while scrolling through a page you’ve experienced it. Each time it gets patched there seems to be a new code hack that the ad coders come up with to bring it back. You could email Kinja to complain and ask that they clean up their code, but yeah...
