I had to sit in on the last half of the meeting and witness their excitement about it. I asked afterwards if this means that I’m going to loose my job to a bot. They responded with a, “No, nooooo.” I guess I should start writing my manifesto now.

Fucking robits

That sucks man. Hopefully it pans out in the end for you. If not, nuts to those guys. You’re better than this job anyway!

Whatever it is that you do, make sure it’s done on separate floors with multiple sets of stairs in between. Since robots can’t handle stairs, this will provide job security for you.

On the upside, in some cases automation increases employment.

Usually my work has caused companies to grow because they can handle that much more than they could before. One dude that was manually collecting data from ~50 machines in the field was spending a tiny bit of his day using the system that collected more from 800 of these machines every minute than he could in a day with even a single machine. He ended up doing very different work and the company more than tripled in size in a mere three years of the 12 it had been in business. I very conservatively estimate that the software/system directly increased employment by at least 20 people and slightly less directly by at least 3x that.

Hell, my current company keeps hiring people as I keep automating away many of the tasks that employees used to do. This allows them to work with/manage a larger number of accounts. In theory, it’s reducing employment because they’d need to hire more people to do it, but if it wasn’t for the automation they wouldn’t be able to increase their customer base as quickly. It’s sort of an arms race in most of the businesses I’ve worked for...

Also, most software projects fail, so I wouldn’t worry too much. It’s hard to hire people that beat the average, even if you’re in the business.

Welcome to the future. We’re all fucked.

I would start the job search ASAP. Nothing managers love more than eliminating salaried positions.
