Once upon a time, the compact two door SUV reigned supreme. Easy to park, easy to maneuver (at low speed, that is), capable of getting to most family oriented trails or beachheads, and surprisingly frugal thanks to 4 cylinder engines. As models bloated, eventually the segment as a whole went the way of the dodo, save the Wrangler.

Two doors were also prevalent with midsize and full-size...

While the segment has been abandoned, I can see manufacturers jumping back into the fray. Imagine a Chevy Trax or Buick Encore coupe. A 2 door Kia Niro. An EcoSport Sport. With the resurgance of compact four door stilted wagons comes the opportunity to revive this segment.
