It looks pretty good, it’s going to get a 6 speed manual with rev matching and it will likely have plenty of power for its size. It’s got a 2.0 engine that will be shared with the recently announced Lexus UX and while they haven’t released power figured for the Corolla it makes 168 hp and 151 lbs-ft in the lexus. Given that this is going to probably be well below 3000 lbs...that should be plenty. plus being NA it should be more linear and actually return real fuel economy benefits.

Its also got real suspension in the rear (multilink) so that bodes well. I’m not saying is an ST or GTI but I would bet that wringing this thing out would be a lot of fun. here’s hoping!

Very curious as to how it’ll stack up against the Civic Hatch.... A fun to drive Corolla??? Could it be?

Like I’ve said a million times, I will trade my Focus ST in on one if they do a GT-S model with the 2.0 turbo out of the Lexus NX and a six speed.

yeah, the NX engine hasn’t been described “fun” by anyone who’s driven it, but they could make some magic out of it.

I mean the ST has the big engine out of the Escape in it, and it’s a riot.

oh i know, Im just saying I hear the NX engine is tuned to be a big midrange punch and not much else, but they could certainly tune it better.

The Germans (Merc) concede to offering a petrol Sprinter, Jeep concedes to putting a diesel in a Jeep, the Z4upra only gets a slushbox, and Toyota makes a somewhat interesting hatch? What a strange, strange automotive climate for 2018.

I hadn’t heard about the gas sprinter. Interdasting. Van Lfye heating up I suppose.

The Corolla hatch is much better looking than the Civic hatch but that’s very easy to accomplish. Compared to the 1.5 turbo in the Civic, it probably should also be a bunch cheaper.

I’m actually kind of surprised Lexus is going to sell the UX with a 168 hp NA 2.0 liter. Every other luxury brand subcompact crossover has a 2.0 liter turbo with anywhere from 200 to 248 hp.

Q3 - 200 hp 2.0T
X1 - 228 hp 2.0T
QX30 - 208 hp 2.0T
E-Pace - 246 hp 2.0T
Evoque - 237 hp 2.0T
GLA - 208 hp 2.0T
XC40 - 248 hp 2.0T

I guess if you throw the base 3-cylinder Mini Countryman in there then you have something less powerful than the UX but it can step up to a detuned 189 hp version of the X1's motor, or the same 228 hp as the X1 in the JCW.

This is what happens when everyone buys gas guzzling crossovers. You get global automotive warming and throws off the climate.

Definitely a car I would consider as my next commuter as well. So glad to see Toyota making an effort with the Corolla again in my lifetime.

I’m glad they’ve finally come around to giving up on their crap infotainment system with CarPlay + Alexa (huh?), but really hoping they throw in AA compatibility by the time the actual car is out too. Would hate for that of all things to be the main detractor in a car that would otherwise be a really fun little run around thing.

Yeah same here really want Android auto on my next DD as I really need to keep the same damn car for more than a year or two for once, doesn’t sound like it will be available though, at least not at launch. It’s a shame and while I’m sure most toyota customers are apple users lol, it does suck for the few of us that want Android support.

Kinja'd!!! ZHP Sparky, the 5th > Khalbali

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah, plus globally speaking (especially in Asia) there are a lot of Android users out there...so not sure how that decision to exclude it came about (or if it was really worthwhile for them at all).

Right now I’m fine on my POS commuter to just have my phone mounted on a vent with Android Auto drive mode just going on the phone screen. But if/when my next car has SOME smart phone compatibility it would be really tough living with it knowing that it just can’t support MY phone.

And I have no idea what Alexa compatibility means?

It’s also Mercedes having, uh, issues with their diesels, as well as many fleets refusing to buy diesel nowadays. (There has actually been a gas Sprinter in the US in the past... but it got just as bad fuel economy as the V8 domestic vans, but with a 3.5 V6 that was slower, so nobody saw the point.) Of course, it’ll probably be a 2.0T gasser, so I wouldn’t expect good mileage from that, it’ll probably constantly be in boost enrichment, spewing particulates.

Kinja'd!!! bhtooefr > Dr. Zoidberg - RIP Oppo

Why use the old one, when the new one could probably drop right in, with 203-206 hp?

Kinja'd!!! bhtooefr > Textured Soy Protein

Kinja'd!!!0

Remember the Buick Encore, though - OK, not a luxury brand, but a premium brand and I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s cross-shopped, but the base engine there is a 138 hp 1.4T. Even the C-HR with a decade-old engine beats that (although the 1.4T probably drives better due to a broader powerband).

Kinja'd!!! Textured Soy Protein > bhtooefr
03/26/2018 at 20:30

Ok, and the Encore starts at $23k vs. $30k for the QX30.

The new 6-speed manual in this car is rated for 280 Nm torque, the A25A-FKS is 250 Nm. So, just put that manual with that engine.

I dunno about Alexa here but for other cars boasting Alexa compatibility they say you can start your car through Alexa by voice command, and that’s about it lol, at least that’s the only function I’ve heard of.

Kinja'd!!! ZHP Sparky, the 5th > Khalbali
03/28/2018 at 11:26

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah I can’t think of what else it might be able to do. Maybe in the future there are more autonomous cars and home devices (like garage doors) you can tell Alexa to get the car out of the garage and to your front door or something?

Either way in something like this is feels pretty silly. Many cars already have remote start through key fob or an app...being able to tell Alexa to do it instead, as an alternative tech feature to having AA capability is just crap.
