Recently, my wife’s 2010 Buick Enclave (151,000 mi.) has developed an intermittent CEL (P0008) - cam timing. These GM V6s are notorious for stretched timing chains. Assume for the moment that’s the problem and it’s a $2200 fix. If I were to trade the vehicle how will the CEL affect the trade in value. In current condition, minus the CEL, it’s worth about $5,000.

I’m just trying to figure out my options.

I assume the dealer will find the same code and come to same conclusion/cost

So expect to be getting $3000 maximum, but since this is a dealer I’d expect it to be lower or possibly higher if they can trade you up into something with a lot of profit for them

Lots of things can affect trade in value, your best bet is to just go and see what they offer you

You might get an idiot, guy who took my Mazda 6 in didn’t even drive it. It had serious issues, but whatever.

He gave me way more than I would have taken.

I’ve reset it a few times and it comes and goes on its own, too. I’m guessing it’s on the edge. It drives great and I know it won’t hurt to drive it with this particular code. But, it’s bugging her and I’m loathe to put that much money into this thing.

I have to live with myself, so the Sharpie really isn’t an option.

I was kidding man. Was referencing this “Lifehack”

Don’t fix it. Take it to several dealers and get estimates on trade-in.

Sortof sneaky, but couldn’t you just clear the CEL before you drive it to the dealer so it’s not on? How long does it take before it comes back on?

It probably depends on a few things like if they’ll try to sell it or send it straight to auction. It also probably depends on if they fix things in house(bigger dealers) or farm out the work(smaller dealers).

Also, it probably depends on what you’re buying and for how much.

Shucks, at 8 years old and 151k on it, I don’t think they will be giving too much for it anyway..... Certainly no more than auction price.

Probably a private sale is the way to go.

How quickly does it turn on? If it takes a few trips then you can just clear just before you walk into the showroom, and then it won’t come during their test drive.

Assuming the light doesn’t come on as soon as you drive it, then use NADAguides to get figures for trade in. KBB is crap and undervalues your car. NADA is great for giving you a realistic number and shows what your car is going for at dealers. There’s really no way for them to bullshit themselves into a lower number, other than haggling over condition. But even that is factored in because it’s all built into the figures.

10-4. It does come and go. I recently swapped oil filters as I read a non-OEM filter can affect it. It came on right after the filter swap, but it’s been off for a couple of days now.

It comes and goes on its own. I swapped oil filters to an OEM unit and it did come back on. But after another reset its been off for a couple of days.

Then I would just say clear it when you get to the dealer. I traded in my mom’s Vue which had an intermittent timing solenoid issue. I was in the process of having it fixed under warranty, but we bought the Golf before we took it back to have the work done.

1. Remove instrument cluster.

2. Remove CEL bulb.

3. Reinstall cluster.

4. Profit $$$.

I’m not going to say I’ve ever done this, but I may have done this to trade our 06 Stratus.
