1997 GMC Safari (Chevy Astro) with 4.3L V6. The water pump has four hose connections: upper and lower radiator hose, “bypass hose,” and
mystery hose
. What the two small-diameter hoses called that connect to the water pump on the 4.3L engine?

Purge?
I don’t know... Really. I’m just amazed they made such a large 6 cylinder engine.
I hope your troubles go away and that the wrencher oppos hand you an answer!

Hard to say without looking at it. Could it be a return line from the heater core?

The bypass hose is the thermostat bypass hose. When the thermostat is closed the water needs somewhere to go. The bypass hose is generally small and cheap and should always be replaced.

Exactly what it turns out to be. Rubber hose at each end with a rigid section in the middle. Attaches with hose clamps.

And so it shall be, with a OE hose from the dealer, as it happens. The other is the return from the heater core, as it turns out.

Ah yes there is usually one of those too.
