We have a little break in the weather, and the dealer gave Meow a bath while they were ordering some interior trim parts to replace under warranty.

The X351 XJ has an eccentric combination of indulgent styling and old-world opulence that sets it apart from your usual Bimmer 7er und Benz S-Klasse. All of the shapes and details are exquisite—there is not a single piece of the interior that is just “there.”

The sun gave a great opportunity to finally take some decent interior pics.

Sun’s out, buns out!

My favourite aspects of the XJ interior are the splatter of finely crafted chrome accents everywhere, and the nearly obscene amount of wood trim. “Trim” is an understatement, it should be called wood panelling.

The abundantly roomy rear seat is the beneficiary of the 5-inch stretch of the L model. I love how the wide wood panel stretches all the way back fron the front seat, accented by a large speaker grille.

What year is it? How reliable has it been?

The color and trim of that interior really comes together well. That’s the kind of space that makes you wish the road trip was a little longer.

2014. If it hasn’t given me problems in a week and a half, does that count as reliable?

The brighter wood trim really de-stuffies the interior style. Nothing wrong with the normal burl walnut but it’s just not as edgy as zebrawood.

They’re not half bad, I used to work on them for a living. Eventually the air suspension goes out, and the water pumps leak. If you’re okay with flaky electronics every now and then, theyre great!

Also, these are the only comfortable modern Jaguar. The XF is disappointing, and the F-Pace is painful.

I absolutely love the way the wood trim wraps around behind the dash. That light wood is great. So many luxury cars look instantly dated with their dark, glossy wood trim

Also, most luxury cars apply wood trim the exact same way: thin strips on the door panel, a centre console surround, maybe a door handle surround. Small accents to enhance the interior.

The XJ’s implementation is definitely unique and evokes much more expensive cars like Rolls, with wood or other exquisite materials occupying a much more prominent role in the interior design.

I saw the new XF. The Sportbrake has a great exterior, but it feels decontented and bland inside. Big bag of Nope. A 5 series has a nicer interior.

Do all XJs have air suspension?

I believe so, at least for the modern ones. There exists a conversion kit to coil springs for the X350 Jaguar, people say it is excellent. So, if the coil-sprung XJ does exist, it’s rare as hen’s teeth. I actually don’t think I ever replaced any X351 airbags, but surely they won’t last forever.

X350s and the rest of the retro-era cars were supremely comfortable, but of the modern-looking cars the X351 is the only one with acceptable ride quality. I’d be wary of any coil-spring conversions for the new vehicle, they’d probably be a bit ‘sporty.’
