Do you notice when people you encounter while regularly driving about get new/different cars? The house on the corner on the way to the in-law’s traded their multi-hued Explorer for a Tahoe, or the lady on your commute that used to drive a yellow beetle now has a yellow Fiat 500.

I’m not good at spotting people but I do notice when cars change on peoples’ yards.

Absolutely, the S90 down the road is definitely new and compliments their XC90 well.

I see people at work and I think, “Hey that’s the lady with the rusty white Jeep.”

This happens in my work place too. We also wonder quite often about some “new” car on our parking lot. Our company isn’t know for high wages so we don’t see very much brand new cars on our parking lots.

Well, it’s hard for me to NOT notice when the neighbors replace cars.

There is someone who commutes on the same schedule as me, and I noted the custom license plate (2DALOO - as in, toodle-oo) on an Infiniti G37x sedan today when she used to drive an Acura TL.

And it bugs me when new cars appear in the lot at work and I don’t know for a fact who they belong to. I have to figure it out. So, yes, I guess I pay attention.

House next door, Dad bought the teenage son a Jetta when he graduated high school. Dad’s truck has been gone (and I’m guessing Dad too) for over a year - kid traded the Jetta for a Chrysler 300. Mom traded her old Saturn in for a Jeep Cherokee. Someone has a WRX (I’m thinking a friend of the son is living there and paying rent, because they only had two kids and daughter has a Corolla with an “I My Toyota” plate frame). I suspect Dad may have been deported, but the kids have turned into little wannabe gangstas. I feel bad for Mom.

So...yes.

Very American of the driver to fail to realize how the plate could be misinterpreted in that way. In fact, on the rest of my drive I was trying to decide how I would have specified the plate to match what I assume was the intention. I settled on “2DLE-OO” but there may be better options.

Oh man this reminds me of a house I used to drive past. She drove a green beetle and he had Mopars and a ‘Cuda drag car. There was a lift in the garage and everything. One day the Mopar trailer was gone as was all the trucks in the yard. The lift was no longer in the garage and the beetle was still their until the place was eventually put on the market and sold.

I can think of a better option.

I notice it.

One family across the street from me have a V6 Mustang convertible, a Mustang GT coupe, a Lincoln Town Car, a Buick Century, a Ford Escape and at least one motorcycle. I notice how they never drive the Town Car and Mustang convertible in the winter... they keep them under tarps. And they rarely drive them in the summer.

Also, they have more cars than their driveway can hold so they constantly park at least 2 cars either on the street or in the parking lot in a school nearby (which you’re allow to do outside of school hours).

Someone in the house also used to have a P71 Crown Victoria... but that car is gone now.

Definitely! My wife does, too, on her highway commute. She and I often talk about “Hey, did you see that new [whatever]? I think it’s so-and-so because I always see it at the place where we used to see their Outback.”

I even posted on Oppo a year or two ago when all the people I knew with TDI Jettas were replacing them with Honda CRVs. No, I mean, nearly every one was replaced with a CRV. One with a Civic, and one with a Crosstrek. But that was fascinating, over a few months, to see them all disappear.

*Interesting side note, I’ve seen now, two of that (dieselgate) era TDI Jetta wagon reappear lately with new temp plates. Those must be fantastic deals right now....

You mean a completely different plate idea? Or no custom plate, since they are rarely clever enough to be worth figuring out?

Yes, though it’s mostly my house that’s added new cars: we took on a roommate with a new Fiesta and I bought a Miata.

My neighbor seems to have dumped his clapped-out GMT400 Suburban for a QX56, which is a nice upgrade.

I may or may not keep a tally of all the cool cars in my neighborhood.

ha! And here you go: pre-dieselgate, this was the price of a 10-year-old car. This one’s even a 6-speed manual!

Yeah

1) Neighbor No 1 sold white 535 and bought a M3.

2) Neighbor right next to No 1 owns a speed / graphics shop and has

- a 2016 5.0 Mustang and added a ducati and a Cadillac Escalade to his fleet

3) Another one

- Bought a 2009 SL63 AMG and b the looks of it couldn’t afford the upkeep on the car. Drives around like a jackass too.

4) Immediate next door neighbor had a mix of Honda / Toyotas. In the last 6 months, everything Toyota has been replaced by something Honda. Right now they have 2 CRVs, 1 Accord, 1 Civic.

5) Neighbor right across is a bunch of doctors and lawyers.

They have had the same set of cars for ever:

- LX570 (2014)

- LX570 (2016)

- GX 460

- RX 350

- ES350.

Sometimes it looks like I have a Lexus dealership and a Honda Dealership.

Last but not the least, The neighbor at the end of the street is a chevy guy:

- C6 Z06

- Suburban LTZ

- Cruze LTZ.

And one weekend, 2 years ago, had 2 Ford GTs parked in his driveway.

Oh yeah, I’ve always done that. I don’t know all of my neighbors, but I know what they all drive.
