Every once in a while a smart roadster or smart crossblade crosses an auction block or is for sale at a specialty car dealership in the USA. This pristine smart roadster comes from Craigslist.

Kinja'd!!!

This car has been hanging around NY CL since December. With an asking price about $27k, this would be best for something like Bring A Trailer. When sold through better channels, pristine and extremely low mileage smart roadsters pull in about the asking price and crossblades usually pull $30-$45k

Kinja'd!!!

At least one owner of this roadster swapped out the smart badging for MB badging, which is...unfortunate

Kinja'd!!!

I’m not surprised that it has a Florida title. Florida is one of those states where they’ll give a title to just about anything. However, the existence of a title means that this car can be registered to drive in some states. Just, make sure the feds never find out that you’re driving this on the streets.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

Can I borrow $27k from someone? <3 I promise to pay it back!

I honestly had no idea these existed. Looks like a toy car from my childhood. I like it.

This car is cool, but buying a car that could be crushed at any time by the Feds is for people who can afford to lose the purchase price.

I’d stay far, far away, lest the temptation become overwhelming! !

Eh, if only if it were that simple. My first smart was a lease-to-purchase. I was still working at McDonald’s back then.

The second smart was a friend helping me out after the first caught fire. I was jobless and he had some wizardry in getting me 0% APR, no down payment, and lower payments than the first smart through selling it to me way under sticker.

The third was free.

The fourth was a couple grand.

I know a couple people who have crossblades. So long as you never try to register it, the feds won’t care. :)

nope not really, I think a bigmac combo is about 9$ cnd so.

bigmacs here are like cellphone plans, take what you pay and double it, and it’s still less than what we pay.

There is no way you’ll be able to maintain this as a Show or Display car. You’ll want to drive it all the time! Maybe it’s time to find an engine converted car like a Hayabusa or electric. Do you already have a CDI version?

It’s actually useful because then when purchased in Canadian funds onto Canadian soil she can actually title it, lol.

Actually, interestingly enough I don’t put a lot of miles on the non-daily smarts. The 2016 has only driven 2,500 miles since I brought it home a year and a half ago and the (first) 2005 has only driven maybe 700 miles since I brought it home last August.

These older smarts are prone to major issues with water ingress so it’s best to only drive them in the summer, spring, fall, and not in the rain. :)

Bad door seals or drainage?

Also, I think it’s time you start some pre-planning for your inevitable Smart Car museum. Have you considered a few locations yet?

Kinja'd!!! Mercedes Streeter > boredalways

Kinja'd!!!1

All of the above. A random seal anywhere may fail at any given moment, secretly allowing water to enter the car. A lot of times, the water will enter spaces that aren’t going to cause a bad smell or be visibly wet, like the battery compartment.

The fortwos are much much much much better than the roadsters though. The roadsters were rushed into production and it shows. The long term quality on them is abysmal (from water ingress to turbos that eat themselves) and smart had processed so many warranty claims that the roadster’s poor reliability is attributed to why smart was liquidated in 2006. That’s part of why if you live in the EU, these things are dirt cheap secondhand.

The roadsters are especially dangerous because if any of the windscreen drains or seals fail, water will find its way into the car’s computer and the whole thing will short itself.

You can only buy one of these, when losing this kind of money is like normal person accidentally losing a $20 bill. It’ll piss you off something fierce, but it’s not really a big deal.

I like them (a lot), but that’s CP all day long. Good condition roadsters with the sport pack go for €7-8k, mint Brabus ones for €10-14k. Convert to $, add $2-3k for shipping and you’re still cheaper off.

Sure, it’s only got 8100 km, but that’s only desirable if you’re planning on never driving it.

The coupé/roadster models leak everywhere which was their undoing as the water tended to ruin the ECUs and cost Merc a fortune in guarantee claims.
