I am having lunch at my local bar and grill, and I get an awful phone call.
This is bad. My 17 year old son was in an accident that was 100% his fault. Fortunately, no one was hurt, but the SportTrac was totaled. Both airbags - that seals the deal.
Money for the T Bird now will go to a boring and safe teen daily driver. He is crying and upset. Dad (and his wallet) are not sympathetic to the upset caused by his negligence.
I have had a pretty rough run of it of late, and this is the cherry on my shit sundae.

Look at the, well it’s not a bright side, so...other side: You are literally the dad from that song taking the T-bird away...

That totally sucks. It isn’t fun having to be Dad and not Car-guy best friend who also happens to be your father. :/

Not being hurt is what matters, cars aren’t cheap but at least they’re cheaper than medical bills.

Shit, sorry to hear that, but I’m glad that he’s okay.
Unfortunately, it’s time for some tough love, but if he’s at fault, then your lack of sympathy is understandable.

as long as no one is injured
a vehicle can always be replaced or, buy it back from your insurance company and fix it perhaps?

I’m glad nobody was hurt, but this would likely get my kid reduced to a bus pass unless it looked truly unavoidable. Gotta take driving seriously.

Well shit, I’m sorry. Glad he’s ok, I remember being 17 and driving around in my Explorer, I did some dumb things. Shit happens, as long as he learns from it, it’ll be ok.

Oof, that’s a bummer. Important lesson to learn, though. Glad no one was hurt.

Dang! Sorry to hear that. I’ m g lad he’s ok.
This must be a bad day for Oppos. My daughter was also in a wreck this afternoon. She stopped at a light, the Pathfinder behind her stopped. The Jeep Cherokee (XJ?) behind the Pathfinder didn’t. Thankfully, the Pathfinder took the brunt of the blow and the damage to the Outback i s minor. Fortunately, nobody was hurt.
The big problem now is dealing with a rental. I’m asking the insurance company to provide a rental while the Outback is repaired, but they don’t normally allow drivers under 18 yrs. old. There’s no way I’m letting her drive my WRX and that’s our only other vehicle right now....

This sucks. I’m glad he wasn’t hurt, but that’s a hard lesson to learn for him.

When I got rear ended as a 17 year old I had to drive my mom’s van while my car was in the shop since I wasn’t allowed to drive the rental. It sucked, I was never happier to be back behind the wheel of the Explorer than the day I got it back.

If we had another vehicle she could drive, we would do the same. Unfortunately, we haven’t replaced the Explorer yet, so all we have is the Outback and my WRX. I’m driving a rental from work and I’m working out of town, so my wife is driving the WRX. That isn’t an option for my daughter - it’s a five speed, it’s too fast, and our insurance won’t cover her in it.

We used to have a local traffic judge that would suspend all the bad stuff pending the high school student ride the bus to and from school for some number of days. If they didn’t do it everything else came back into play and he would also add violating a court order. Generally the students got the message and followed his directions.

Green vehicle killed on St. Paddy’s day. There is no justice in this world. I just poured you some Jameson, which I then drank for you.

Well fuck. Glad he was okay, but this still sucks.
Both my brother and stepbrother have gotten into accidents within the last few months (stepbro was at fault, bro was 50/50) and yeah, while they may feel terrible, that doesn’t magically print the money to fix their mistakes. Accidents happen, but unfortunately there are natural consequences.

Damn, glad he is OK.....not good that it was caused by his error, but live and learn, unfortunately. Any points coming off his license or the like?
Not sure what to suggest for a cheap and safe DD for him. A Corolla would be an OK bet. Accents like mine are cheap, but they didn’t get the highest safety rating in their time (not TERRIBLE, but acceptable).

I’m so glad he wasn’t hurt. That’s the most important part.
I have a counter suggestion to a Ford 500... a Fiat 500. No, I’m serious! It’ll be cheap to buy, it’s fun to drive even if it is slow, and it’s small which naturally makes one a more defensive driver. I don’t know how reliable they are long term, but for the year and a half I had mine I didn’t have any mechanical problems at all. Just interior trim that was wonky and one taillight that went thru bulbs more than normal.
