In class today, my students thanked me for being their Biomed professor. They said it was clear in how I teach that helping them is important to me, and that they really appreciated what I do for them. One gal was even tearing up as she said this. These are the moments I live for as a teacher. They mean more to me than I can say, and are why I do this job instead of just my research alone.

Have a green Jag to celebrate with me.

I’m a little excitable myself. Drank regular coffee. That roadster is making me even more excited.

Sounds like you are a good teacher!

You describe exactly what I appreciate in a good professor , the skill to transmit knowledge, and be able to inspire and help students. I applaud you for that, as I know of some professors that would rather stick to research, and clearly show that in their teaching (I’m sure that is not something that limits to my university, but exists everywhere) .

Have this green Jag, as a thank you for making academia a better place!

Thanks. Teaching and research give two different kinds of gratification. I like them both, which is why I sought a university job instead of industry. I also like teaching young kids. I did a science lecture in my daughter’s 5th grade class, and boy was that a blast!

Sounds like you really like your job.

I’m almost at the end of my masters, and am sort of doubting between continuing in academia (so doing a PhD) or finding a job in industry. I like research, but I’m not sure if I would want to stay in academia, as I don’t really see myself suitable as a teacher, so I would probably leave academia after obtaining a PhD, which makes me wonder what value it would add. Luckily I’ve got a few months left to make up my mind, haha

Some days.

PhDs are essential for independence and success in some fields and dispensable in others. A structural engineer, for instance, doesn’t need one to be successful unless he wants to be in academia.
