"Yowen - not necessarily not spaghetti and meatballs" (yowen)

Hey guys, on my 2010 Taurus SHO (with 3.5L EcoBoost twin turbo), I’ve started noticing a strange noise when i decelerate at slower speeds (might be happening at faster speeds too, but I just can’t hear it). It’s almost like the sound of an owl, if that makes sense. And it makes me worry something might be wrong with one or both of my turbo’s? I was faintly hearing it for the past few months, but it seemed far more pronounced yesterday. Any thoughts? Or any ideas on how I can further diagnose this on my own?
edit: I should add, not sure I should call it deleration, it happens when I let off the gas paddle while accelerating.

it could be the owl in your trunk.

Got it, I will check for trunk-owls, haha.

Car Talk would have a field day with this question. First they would want to know what kind of owl, then if the noise varies by time of day. 10/10 I obliviously have not idea.

The FIRST thing they would do is ask me to mimic the noise.

Could it just be something as simple as tire roar? Braking tends to make it more noticeable.

For all problem related to unfamiliar noises, I highly recommend a solution an old mechanic proposed - turn up the volume on your radio.
When something falls off, you will know what the problem was

I just edited my post, I think I was wrong to call it deceleration. It happens when I accelerate and let of the gas mid-acceleration. I definitely don’t think it’s tire-related. I think the noise would happen more often if it were and it’d be less distinct and more gradual.

I would be fine with that if I weren’t just about to put upgraded downpipes on, haha.

have you checked if there is an owl in your vehicle?

this has already been asked. I’m starting to feel like I’m actually on an episode of car talk.

Is it happening regardless of there being boost built? You could certainly have a vacuum leak somewhere. Any loss of power under any particular conditions? Changes while the engine temp changes? I do not know what it means based on any of these questions but these are relevant questions in the diagnosis.
I’ve got a similar noise in my STi under acceleration with boost and the issue is a torn intercooler hose. I know this because I REALLY struggled to reattach the hosing and likely tore a small section of it. Will replace it eventually but the “owl noise” is certainly there for now.

What you’re describing sounds like the sound turbos make when they have a blow off valve that vents to atmosphere or a really short intake. Check the recirculation tube on your turbos. One of them probably came off. Your intake tube might also be loose or have a tear in it.

I assume it happens when at least a small amount of boost is built since it’s a noise that happens upon letting off the accelerator, a noise I would think occurs right around the time a blow off valve would do its noise thing. I do not think it goes away after the car is warmed up. Power seems good, but hard to tell whether I’m still at full power since it’s a ludicrously overpowered engine for the application, haha.

Has it thrown a CEL/MIL? The evap canister purge valve can make a hooting noise when it fails... But that should lead to an immediate CEL... Boost controller valve or bypass valve sound more likely... But without hearing it in person it’s hard to tell... Do you need boost built (under acceleration load) or does it make it if you just Rev the engine?

thanks, I’ll go through everything under-hood and see if I can find anything obvious. I did, roughly a year ago, have a turbo replaced, so maybe they missed something upon reassembly.

you have been asked if there is an owl specifically in the trunk.
i am asking if there could be an owl elsewhere.

I’ve only gotten to do it while driving, not when stationary. Not sure if I could get it to do it when stationary. I definitely think it happens after I’ve built up boost since it happens when I accelerate and let off the gas suddenly. Which is normally when a blow-off valve would make its noise right? That’s why I’m thinking this is turbo related.
I think I’ll have to inspect everything underhood for any potential leak anywhere.

haha, if there is it would be traveling with me everywhere I go for at least 6 months now, it makes sense that it’s louder now since it’s gotten older and presumably bigger.

Those tubes get knocked off all the time and some manufacturers don’t use clamps. They are very small so it is easy to miss. Won’t really screw anything up, but could cause you to run a bit rich. An open or loose air filter box could probably cause the same sound.

probably a loose/cracked boost tube. we see these all the time on the trucks at my shop. the owl noise is a great way to describe it.
