Went to a furniture place yesterday that’s in an old Menard’s building and I have never seen wood trusses in a building this big before. It was pretty cool.
This is like maybe a third of the building.
They also had a studio set up for taking pics of the furniture which was cool to see,
Also saw this,

It’s a lumber truss. Normally they look like these:
It’s a very inexpensive way to span a moderate distance. Generally not preferred but its cost effective. Burns like a box of matches. Machines pre-cut the lumber based on a design and the metal plates have lots of teeth to hold the members in place without nails.

Lumber burns very well, but surprisingly heavy timber has a better fire rating than plain steel as it tends to char which slows the burn.
two-by (2x_) material just burns like matchsticks.

Damn gusset plates. The bane of any firefighter. Those things fail faster than a high school student taking a calculus test they didn’t study for.

BUT CHEAP!
IMO, there are few applications where I’d want a light lumber truss. I’m not a fan.

Agreed. Look at how they’re building high rise apartment complex’s! Lightweight wood trusses with pressed and laminated wood beams! And they are wondering why, during construction especially, they are burning like match boxes!

We just had one of those last week:
3-alarm, could see flames and smoke for miles. Left 8 or so surrounding buildings damaged and uninhabitable. All plywood and floor truss construction.

They basically melt. It’s scary. And they think this is a good thing to send us firefighters into! No thanks. Surround and drown!
