In 4th grade (2001) my friend’s dad picked me up in a brown air cooled 911. It was sensory overload: acceleration pushing me back into the tiny rear buckets, hearing an amazing engine note that was behind me , and just being in a classic car. That got me hooked for life. I loved that car. He traded it for a Buell...

I once read of someone trading an NSX in for a Prius. (In before “that’s what Honda did”)

I don’t have a lot of experience with really nice or unusual cars, but my dad has stories of my uncle and the Ford Skyliner retractable hard top he owned in the early 60s. The stories center mostly on keeping the top working which wasn’t easy and the reason he got rid of it for a boring sedan. I also barely remember the 63 Galaxie convertible and 57 Fairlane (312 Thunderbird Special engine) that my dad had at various times that eventually morphed in to the series of boring pickups that I knew as a teen. Yes, I come from a Ford family.

Little different since we didn’t “let go” but I guess it’s a nice “what could have been”.

Back before I could drive, my dad was looking for a new car (which ultimately would probably end up mine years later when I could drive) so I was going around with him looking at cars. Saw an E30 M3 with about 200k, needed paint. Besides that it ran great and had a straight body with a nice interior. Asking price was <$10k. Forgot the exact price but it was low enough to where I was brainstorming how I could come up with the money to buy it myself.

My dad bought a V6 accord instead.

My dad sold his ‘66(?) Plymouth Fury III Wagon with stick and the HO 383 (4bbl) with HD suspension and brake options to a highschool kid who wrapped it around a tree in less than a week. Turns out there may have been fewer than 8 equipped that way ever built.

Kinja'd!!!

like this, but a III, instead of a II, and full of 383/4bbl loudness.

My Neighbor owned a 80's 911 in purple. bought it for 40,000 and barely drove it and put out an ad on it for 44,000. A man sees the ad and buys the car for 44,000. Six months later, my neighbor buys a book on Ferdinand Porsche and is reading it, when all of the sudden, he sees the car he sold. Turns out, that was one of three cars Ferry Porsche had signed in the 80's and was worth 200,000.

I know someone who almost sold a 993 Turbo for a 997 turbo S; thankfully they never did and I got to drive that amazing 993

Not auto, but real estate.

My grandpa sold a 7 bedroom house in Southampton NY in the 70s for close to 100K (a huge profit over the purchase price a decade or so earlier).

It’s worth about 5 million now.

I remember when I first got it and booted it for the first time (found in a dumpster) the firmware advised me to check the system clock as it indicated 3426 days since last boot. The clock was less than a minute off.

Longtime neighbor of mine sold his Porsche 993 Turbo (6 speed, no A/C,no sunroof stripper car) for a 991.1 variant as he could no longer comfortably get in the old car. At my wedding he quipped “would have handed it over to you if I knew you were into cars” !()%!&(_@!!@$!

Not should’ve never sold, but should’ve bought. Right after I got my permit I found an E30 325ix Sedan. Auto, but still, AWD E30. Reasonably priced at ~$3500 if I remember right. Car was clean besides some light hail damage and some corrosion by the battery. I at the time didn’t know how special it was and moved on to something else rather quick because of the two issues stated above. Regret that to this day.

In the early to mid 1930's, my great-grandfather owned a furniture factory in Germany and wanted to surprise my great-grandmother, so he bought her a new Mercedes. She was concerned that such an extravagant car would attract unwanted attention to a Jewish during what was becoming a less than friendly time.

They fled to America on a ship called the New Amsterdam not long afterwards. Two weeks later came a night that would eventually be known as Kristallnacht. They got out just in time and wouldn’t have retained the car anyways, but I wish I at least knew more about what it was.

That’s funny, I have a similar 80s BMW story. I was looking for E24s when I was a teenager and ended up with a great one, but passed on a euro model that was all the way up in northern vermont. It was also $3500 and I’ll never forgive myself for not checking out at the very least.

:O yeah that’s pretty lit. That is happening to baby boomers who bought Boston area apartments in the 70s/80s that are now worth millions. We have some family friends who paid low 6 figures for a place a very long time ago and sold it for 2.5

My grandma told me a story about her old house, her whole extended family lived in a massive house. She told me they used to have a player piano, they couldn’t find anybody who wanted it so it got destroyed and thrown out.

Happened last week actually. Wanted to trade in my Saturn Sky Redline. I wanted $7,500, and was willing to take $7k. They offered $8,400 and I jumped at it. Traded it on a Saturday. They flipped it for $20k cash by the following Wednesday.
