Calling all OPPOs with track experience in the DFW area - Tulsa’s Caffeine & Gasoline group will be at MSR-Cresson running the full 3.1 on Monday, the 26th. We have a handful of spots open if any of you are interested. This event is for those with track experience only. Let me know if you’d like to join us and I’ll hook you up with our organizer.

Ahh if only I had track experience and could somehow get the day off. I will be in Dallas that day for work. Also having a car worth tracking would be nice too instead of a rental car lol. I am at least planning to do the autocross this weekend!

The 3.1 is fun, unfortunately I’m a school teacher and taking a day off is a bit of a pain. Most groups only allow solo approved drivers onto the 3.1 because there are a couple of tricky spots that can be dangerous.
My best lap starts at 18:07 and I spin at the very end:

You’re about 10 seconds faster than I am on the 3.1. Mine is a 2:45, heres some footage from my fast lap the first time I went out there.

I drove the full 3.1 circuit once in my 117 Coupe. It was the parade lap in the middle of the day where everyone is welcome, no helmets, no registration or anything. Only problem was, I was driving the old girl harder than I felt comfortable and I was still the slowest thing out there... on the parade lap, which is speed regulated! If I can get a full day off of work, I may come watch you guys though!

Haha! Don’t take a vacation day just on my account, but a day at the race track is never a bad day...

Can’t wait! I’ve been down on the 1.7 several years ago with The Driver’s Edge for a weekend. Which spots do I need to watch out for especially?

Precisely! Also, being a freelancer, it’s less of a vacation day and more of a “am I capable of organizing my schedule in such a way” kind of day.

Ricochet is faster and more dangerous since there is now a straight leading into it, and the transition from the 1.7 to the 1.3 after rattlesnake can upset the car (the walls are close on both sides and if you have an off there you are probably going to hit either the tire wall or pit wall).

Thanks for the heads-up! I’ll look out for those spots. I’m pretty conservative and cautious and slowly build my times up over the course of a day at the track, so I’m not too worried, but there’s a whole lot more to remember on the 3.1 compared to the 1.7 or at Hallett. I plan on watching lots of video before then to get the right line and markers in my head!

The 1.3 is one of my favorite tracks and is great for a lower horsepower car, that’s the part that most people are less familiar with. The 1.7 parts are all familiar and pretty straight forward.
If you haven’t done the 1.3, you’ll have to get used to the toilet bowl (there is a blind crest going into a downhill right hander). You have to hit the apex and trust that the course will be on the other side. If you go over the crest with any steering angle, you could end up spinning.

Hopefully my work schedule lines up. I leave on 3/30 for a two week business trip to Japan, so we’ll see how busy I am before hand. Hopefully I can make it!

Like I said, only come out if you’d really like to, and not on my account. I’m very jealous of your trip to Japan. Hope you have time to enjoy yourself as well, and it’s not all business.

Any excuse to go hang out with other car guys is a good excuse! I go back to Japan about 3 times a year, so I always try to tack a few days on at the beginning or end of the trip for myself. This time I’ve got a couple days at the beginning. Will actually be able to attend this event being put on by my good friends at Classic Car Nagoya:

Theres an upside down blue waterski ramp thats on a hill on the opposite side of toilet bowl. I point the car at that just before the crest of the hill.
