My E92 still surprises me to this day with things I haven’t noticed or realized. Today I found out my cd/preset buttons have proximity sensors.

Kinja'd!!!

1-8 actually senses if I am about to push something. I fall in love with this car more each passing day.

I think I’d feel betrayed if I discovered that about my car. If I found that they’d taken the idea of a button and over-complicated it to that extent.

Did you know you can set those for different things besides stations? Like a common destination.

For example if I long press preset 1, it will start navigation with my home address as the destination. They can be shortcuts for all sorts of things. Like an idrive menu you use a lot, that might normally take 3 clicks to get to.

Yes, they’re capacitive. The best feature is you can program one of them to TURN THE SCREEN OFF ENTIRELY.

That’s dope I’ve never heard of something like that.

Wait so are they capacitive or do they have proximity sensors? If capacitive, what does it do? Like can you tap it (not depress it) and have it do the same function?

As far as I know they’re capacitive, and you can program them to do whatever iDrive function you want. Touching the button without pressing it shows you what it’s programmed to.

That kind of makes me sad I don’t have I-Drive

Yeah it’s one of the very few where you can shout out chassis codes and no one looks at you funny.

I haven’t delved deep enough into them to explore everything. They could be powered by black magic but it doesn’t matter because I was giggling like an idiot in my car for like 5 min messing with them. I just love how the car still offers up small little surprises.

That I did know, I keep those buttons to radio stations because I am pretty quick with the idrive systems navigation menu.

It’s a double edge sword. The system isn’t future proof as the newer versions of idrive definitely are highly improved. Unfortunately too because of how they implement their system I am pretty sure the whole dash would need to come out which makes it much more of a hassle than what it’s worth. Plus non idrive cars have a cleaner dash and have one less thing to worry about breaking.

The buttons still work though so if those break it’s not the end all be all. Definitely showing it’s German side though.

Tapedecks are cool too. I’m debating what I should put into my mustang. If I can find a tapedeck player that someone has customized with an aux jack as well I’d put that into it.

Should it fail, or if you want to upgrade the system, there are numerous android based systems which are plug and play and cost an arm and a leg. This is just one of them:

That is one thing I really like about not having it, I don’t have a 5 inch bump on the top of my dash

Yeah I like them. You can use them for radio presets but I don’t listen to the radio so I have them set to things like flipping the map screen from day to night mode (because the car stupidly doesn’t have a sensor for night mode or tie this to the headlights), turning off the display entirely, toggling split screen on/off, etc.

That helps a lot, I hate when functions I use often are buried under menus. I also rarely listen to radio so having this alternative feature is clever thinking on BMWs part.

Also I think iDrive gets a bad wrap, the times I’ve used it I’ve gotten comfortable with it very quickly. After a day or two I was already doing stuff without needing to take my eyes off the road. My family’s CRV has a touch screen and I swear it is the most dangerous thing I’ve ever used while driving. Some kind of resistive display that reminds me of a Palm Pilot or Treo, it’s inaccurate and locks you out of most functions if you are going above 5 mph.
