Had the Blue Ridge to myself for about three hours yesterday, from Roanoke down to somewhere past Fancy Gap, where it was closed.

Lots of recently cleared (and still being cleared) trees, and occasional snowy areas, but literally only saw two other cars briefly going in my direction.

And no, it was not warm enough to put the top down for more than a mile and a photo op.

That’s a nice stretch of road. We did Asheville to Roanoke two summers ago and it was awesome. We actually spent the night in Fancy Gap. There’s a guy who converted train cabooses into hotel suites with king size beds and jacuzzi tubs. Pretty awesome.

It’s always warm enough to put the top down you heathen lol. I’ve loved every drive I’ve taken on the BRP in my Miata. It’s always special for sure. My last drive down was especially nice since it was the beginning of my awesome cross country drive. It was a perfect way to set the tone; way late fall leaves scattered about, road to myself, just warm enough to not die with summer tires, and endless open midweek roads to tear up in my autocross machine. It really made me appreciate the simple pleasure of going for a cruise. Something I don’t get to do often enough with working all of the time. And something I also lose sight of while planning the next autocross upgrade - simply enjoying a drive is the true wonder of a fun car.

I’ve been down that road at least a half a dozen separate times. I love Socal where I moved to but that area on the BRP is hard to replace.

Beautiful. I remember driving down to visit a friend at VT, on the highway just after the break of dawn, and momentarily thought I was looking down at an incredibly beautiful coastline. In reality, what I perceived as the ocean was actually a thick cloud cover some thousand feet below. Literally looking down at the clouds. Not a bad morning.

Temps were just above freezing (or lower) at elevation. Not too cold for me, but too cold for the top, lest anything crack or snap.

I left my snow tires on as I was leaving Jersey into PA just as the storm was rolling in, and the forecast had lots of low temps.

But yes...it was a glorious day.

I recall a 35 mph speed limit when I drove my SHO there ... still the case?

It’s 45mph with a few spots at 35 (at least on the upper section I drove). But, no stop signs or lights.
