Here we go. The guy that brings you the odd and stupid automotive games is back. Today, I want to know one thing; what’s your unusual dream car.

No, not a Ferrari F40. Not a Mclaren F1. I mean, what’s your actually attainable dream car you’ve always had but never owned.

I’m going to start. Ever since I was about 10 or 11, I always wanted an E36 M3. The E36 styling was amazing to me, and I’ve never got to shake that feeling. Back in the day, “Dado” was the man in his illegal street racing videos and his famed arrest at over 200 miles an hour in his turbocharged E36 M3. Ever since those days, I’d dreamed of a Technoviolet E36 M3, or a Dakar Yellow. Of course with the high rise motorsports Evo rear spoiler.

That’s it. That’s a car I’ve always dreamed of having. I don’t know why I haven’t. It’s kind of eating me up now.

Your turn!

S60r. Yes, I prefer the sedan over the wagon. It’s like a luxury Sti with tons of added quirkiness. It holds two of the world’s greatest seats, a unique 6 speed spaceball manual transmission, 5 cylinders,aa fantastic character line, gorgeously memorable taillights and my all-time favorite OEM wheels. It’s not even that pricey, with Craigslist specials found below $5000 regularly, decently maintained good condition ones seemingly around $6-9000 and perfect, mile-long service record, no scratches or blemishes examples still well below $15,000.

I have a bookmarks folder full of obscure craigslist searches called “bad ideas” and this is in it:

Kinja'd!!!

There are a bunch of cars in that folder I’m always actively looking for, all from this era. But these have been an obsession of mine for years thanks to the taillights, quirky V12, and the fact that they share a steering wheel and gauge cluster with my old E24 635csi. Here are some of the other cars in the “bad ideas” folder which is named that because if one of these comes up in good condition at a dealership, the hypothetical procedure would be to trade in my 21st century car for an old, unreliable, and slightly dangerous barge. I’ve come close but never actually pulled the trigger. Hopefully that’ll happen some day because my worry is that every single car on this list will either triple in price or disappear completely over the next 10 years. As this is the era of cars that really gets me going, I feel a genuine sense of urgency to burn through all of these one driving season at a time if I can while they’re still $10k for a beautiful example:

Kinja'd!!!

Manual swap (Driven Man). Well documented with a parts list; these use a 3 speed GM auto from the factory so the bell housing bolt pattern isn’t anything exotic. Then you have a vintage V12 GT with a stick for 15K.

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

In case you can’t tell already, I like turds. Big ones. This has a 4.2 or 4.9 liter V8 out of a Maserati Indy, and some even came with 3 pedals. They are nearly impossible to find and disappear immediately when they come up. I haven’t seen a QPIII on the ‘list in around a year.

Kinja'd!!!

The MKII Supra P-Type. I don’t remember what the other package was called but the P-Type has the extra loud roof spoiler/wheel arch flares combo that cranks the eighties up to 11. Almost as cool as it is slow.

Kinja'd!!!

The exceedingly rare E34 540i. Stock 3 pedal cars are either beat to shit with 250k on them, or priced higher than an M5 because they’re rarer. The scheme would be to get a minty AT example and do a swap. Again, I have only seen one such car for sale in the last year, which came from GA to MA.

Kinja'd!!!

Right now I don’t think you can’t find better bang/buck in the vintage Euro market. I mean look at this thing... It’s a series I but the series III is just the same car with bigger bumpers. Unlike the Germans though the Brits restyled it to make the crash regulation diving boards less noticeable.

Kinja'd!!!

The 560SEC doesn’t need much explanation. It’s the last of the overengineered S classes in pillarless coupe form.

Kinja'd!!!

Yeah, that’s right. I would. How hard can it be?

Ha - I’ve owned a few old cars (it helps that I’m actually old, too), but I’ve always owned the base car that the muscle car was based on. Cutlass, Skylark, Monte Carlo, etc.

Guy in HS had a ‘65 GTO with tri-power and a 4 speed. First time I rode in the back of that car was a life-changing epiphany that I still remember, 34 years later.

Deal!!

Yeah I’m all about late eighties/early nineties. The most crackpot scheme of them all (but not really, there are mount kits and even wiring harnesses) is to do a VH45DE swap on an S14 canyon carver type build. I’m going to be helping my friend with a turbo E36 build this summer so extreme RWD jealousy is in my future.

They’re pretty much the same. Kind of an Eclipse/Talon/Laser situation, except all three were still badged as Toyotas. The Cresta was marketed as the luxury version, the Chaser the sporty version, and the Mark II somewhere in between.

vw with the “extra bores” kit...... its always been some variant of big/high winding engine in a small car. for the longest time it was an early 62/3 nova, but when i actually went to go and put my hands on one, i couldnt touch a beaten to death shell for anything less than about $1500. i looked for the better part of 5 years(the days before craigslist) and all i found was junk that needed everything. i was going to put together an s10, but at that moment, there were no less than 5 v8 s10 running around my small town, so i passed on that. THEN quite by accident i discovered that beetles had enough room on the inside to fit just about anything, and at near the same time i found out that i could buy all the shells that i could lay my hands on for between $50 and $350 a pop..... i had found my attainable dream car........

for me, this is one of those “meet your heroes” cars..... back when i was hunting the nova, i built its engine.......from scratch. its a smallblock 302 chevy, but built with 86 year modelish parts. and its got a wide ratio muncie 4 speed. the one with the 2.52 1st gear. and my good friend showed me how to do the fabrication on it, how to narrow the 9 inch, and build its 4 link. the whole build has been slow and deliberate. its one of those forever cars. the kind you cant bring yourself to sell cars(at any price)... and its one of those cars that all a guy has to do, is go through the motions and BUILD it. none of the parts were that expensive, but it took the effort of having to take the time to find them, save up the money to buy them, and or to rebuild them. i am working hard to have it done late this summer...... gotta few quick guys i been meaning to look up......
