I finally stopped phantom clutching not long ago. I need to find another manual for a commuter.

Heard the WRX has a CVT now. How does that make you feel?

That guy’s reaction to the transmission is the same as my reaction to his mustache.

The worst is when you phantom clutch then “shift” gears and suddenly your in neutral and confused.

I have no idea what to do with my right hand when I’m driving my wife’s car.

I’m pretty ambivalent about it. One thing that shocked me was when my salesman told me how hard they were to keep on the lot at first. They had a lot of people come in and ask if they had one in stock and leave if they didn’t.
I think it kills the purpose of the car but I understand why people do it. And to be honest the stock shifter/clutch in the WRX isn’t that great. Doesn’t stop it being fun when you drop it into 3rd and take off though. Can’t quite match that feeling in a CVT ;)

Heehee, the jokes almost write themselves ...

They want a relatively reliable budget Audi A3/A4 Quattro. I test drove the CVT and hated it and I immediately realized that the WRX was meant to have a manual and nothing else (OK DSG mayyybe). The CVT’s lag combined with the Turbo lag neuters the car so much.

lol.. nice i like
that said... most professional drivers i know drive automatics by choice.... guess it just makes sense when you’re driving 10-12 hours a day (they do tend to have manual toy cars for their time off tho)

A DSG would have been awesome. I loved the DSG in the GTI, it was a huge laugh. But they already had the CVT developed for the Forester XT so I can see how it made sense for the engineers at subaru.
You hit the nail on the head with your Audi A3/A4 Quattro comparison. No hatch , and a (barely) nicer interior. Heck they even removed the option for roof rack mounting points and only reintroduced it with the ‘18 model year. Its like they were trying to make the car
less
practical for some reason.

I borrowed my dad’s MDX once after a long period of driving nothing but manuals and when absent-mindedly setting off from a stop sign(thank god no one was behind me) I simultaneously lifted off the gas, slammed my left foot onto the far end of the double-wide brake pedal and yanked the automatic gear selector into low-gear.
I can only imagine, “no officer I haven’t been drinking, I just don’t know how to operate this newfangled automobile with its magic gearbox”

Never got the phantom clutch thing, I just shifted to left foot braking.
Though sometimes I will move my hand over when I want another gear. Thats helped in my 540i that I can use the slap shift

Were you phantom clutching and grabbing the corner of the brake pedal while reaching for the shifter that doesn’t exist?

I don’t look anything like that. My mustache is neatly trimmed.
