Prompted by me asking a friend who has never seen my car before to walk outside and grab something from it.
Friend: *walks back inside with requested item* “So...what kind of car is that?
Me: “It’s a Saab.”
Him: “Ok, but like, what is that?”
Me: “It’s Swedish.”
Him: “Ooooh fancy. So is it a sports car?”
Me: “It’s a hatchback?”
Him: “Okay, but I saw it has that hood thing, so is it fast?”
Me: “I mean, I guess so. It can keep up with some sports cars.”
Him: “Cool!”
Scene
Now imagine how much confusion I would’ve gotten if I tried to explain the Subaru part.

Remember that line the next time someone tells you that fake scoops and whatnot don’t fool anyone. :P

I complain more about the fake badges not fooling anyone, but fair point.

Right? Like you saw it sitting there, and you went inside of it, it’s literally a small hatchback. The “ooooh fancy” part was mostly a sarcastic reaction to me saying it was Swedish.

Not directed at you specifically - I bitch about both fake badges and tacked on gills, scoops etc to no end myself.

It seems that non-car people don’t think cars where ever built there. I have had many people ask if my Volvo was German.

Haha! Saab is Swedish, but your car is barely that (like 3%, maybe?). I encourage you continue this conversation and learn him about the Saabaru!

Sometimes I do, but for most non-car people that just results in their eyes glazing over and an acute desire not to talk to me anymore

Your title is misleading this has nothing to do with electric cars.
I am guessing you have the only Saab in the area by saying it is a Saab differentiates it from all the other cars.

It’s funny explaining the gas mileage my STi gets to normal non-car people. Without the giant wing on the trunk, these people think modern normal commuter sedan. So they assume like 30 Mpg at least. Meanwhile I can maybe achieve 21 on the highway if I really try. I think the ridiculous Park bench that comes with the car makes it more obvious to normal folk.

I just really didn’t feel like explaining any more details than necessary because telling him it’s a Saab 9-2x Aero which is just a Subaru WRX rebadged wouldn’t have meant a thing to him.

I once (almost) got in a yelling match with a tire store guy. He essentially refused to believe Saab was a make, not a model.
Me: Hey I need [tire size] and was wondering if you have any in stock.
Him: Ok, what car is that for?
Me: 1984 Saab 900 Turbo
Him: Ok, what is the make of that?
Me: ... Saab.
Him: Is that a Chevolet?
Me: What? No... The make is Saab. S-A-A-B.
Him: [long pause] Ok I have a 1986 Bentley-
Me: No!
It went on like that for a while. My only guess is he was trying to match make and model to the tire size I gave him? It was... a thing.

When I tell people I get poor gas mileage in my 2 Lexi they are never surprised. Mostly because I just say they both have V8s and they go ohh

Ask them to move it for you, then stand back and watch as they hopelessly search for the ignition.

Being a Saabaru, the ignition is sadly in the normal spot on the steering column. Though they probably still couldn’t get it going given that it’s a stick shift.

No matter though, I still like it.
Speaking of vents, anyone remember when Subaru had the electronic oscillating center vents? Those were neat.

My favorite is moving cars around the driveway and having the equivalent of a V16 running. It’s surprisingly loud when they’re both on.

Do they make a kit to relocate it to the proper Sweedish location?

Holy smokes, this was a fast moving thread lol. Apologies, I like to scroll down and open up several tabs at once and work my way through them - so my comment section was behind the times!
I have never seen anyone relocate theirs, however I have never searched for it either.

All good, I was just funnin’ ya.
I’m pretty sure I would be compelled to relocate it were I to own one. I mean, I’d probably never get around to actually doing it, but darnit if I wouldn’t be compelled.

I don’t know if there is a more vague question on earth than “what kind of car is that?” When asked a question like that, assuming my audience is too uninformed to get more specific, I am tempted to throw back things like “It’s a 2007 Jiggler XL-S Sport Hatch. I’ve got the additional Barometric Flusher mod that gives me more power in the turns.”
or just get cranky and go
“It’s one of those with four wheels.” and then watch them mentally squirm for a few seconds before getting pissed.

I pulled up to a toll booth once in my 2001 bmw 325xi wagon, which was about 8 years old at the time. The guy in the booth says, “Nice car. Can you handle it?” I mean, I guess he was assuming a) it was fast and b) I was too young to handle the assumed power. I was like, “uhh. yes?” Maybe I looked young, but I was 28.
Also,
you work at a toll booth, you see cars all day. How do you think an older wagon is somehow really fast?
