This week we have a 1988 Mercedes 190e 2.3 automatic, will it smog? We have yet to find out, come take a tour through our latest contestant.
Its been sitting with a non-op since 2014 but it runs thanks to its new battery and alternator, that’s about the only new things on it. The tires were new when the car got parked but now they are questionable.
Its been repainted, the interiors faded and cracked from wasting away in the sun but other than that it’s cosmetically decent with no dents.
Mechanically problems: It shifts too soon and dosent downshift correctly (arrording to an RO it’s low on fluid), Front struts are properly blown, the car will only start if you fiddle with the shifter, and the brakes barely work (I assume from collecting moisture while it sat)
Next up is a smog test at some point next week after bleeding the brakes.

I’d pay about 50 bucks for that.

Apart from the fact you can make sweet furniture out of the seats.

My brother and and I did that with a pair of Volvo seats after my moms friend wrecked her 740. Best gaming seats ever

Fluid is a good starting point on the shifting problem, shifter bushings are prolly in need too. But those trans did need rebuilding after awhile.
The not starting in park is a neutral safety switch if memory serves.
And id bleed the brakes to see if any calipers are locked open.
And go bilsteins if you can spare the coin up front.
I ran one of those with the same year and engine for many a year before swapping engines.

Smog test in PA for a pre OBD2 when “you know a guy” is sticking the sniffer up a cleaner tail pipe. I never had dirty cars, but this is common here. Is it the same in other states?

Handsome little car. When they were still sort of boxy. Before the jelly bean shapes. Before the dark times.

The 300sd is my current daily but lately it’s been missing really bad at idle when cold. It’s also super beat up so I found a project worth spending money on (cleaner body, better interior, no compression issues)
I didn’t like the Camaro so I sold it to an acquaintance.

That’s good to know with the safety switch.
Do the bilsteins make that much of a difference?

In ca it’s a visual inspection (usually not thorough) and the sniffer test at idle and 2000rpm. Shops faking smog results is very illegal so it’s not common, and usually they don’t want to deal with anything pre obd2. For example the local shop said they won’t smog anything older than 02 (I’m guessing that they don’t want to fix or diagnose emissions issues) So the next nearest shop is 40 miles away

You can get kybs, but they dont seem to hold up like the bilsteins.
Also, watch out for transitional year weirdness. Little things changed between 87 88 and 89 as well as 92.
Little things about the dash, wiring harnesses, and other bits here and there.
