It’s Monday, but I’m off the next two days so it’s like a Friday for me. So Fronday. I’m celebrating by doing some unnecessary car shopping for a mutant drift Camry.
Yes, that will do. Looks mostly stock, which is a refreshing change for the X triplets. This particular one isn’t importable until 2020, but I’ll be paying off the TSX until then anyway. Do want.

I’m most likely going to get a 100. The TSX should be paid off in early 2020, which will give me about 18 months to save up to get one right around the time they’ll become importable (September 2021). I want a Cresta the most because they’re the oddball of the three.

That is....the 1992-1996 generation of Camry? I’m looking at the doors and front quarter panel here...
Man i saw a 2-door one on the way to work today.

It’s what would have been the 1992-1996 Cressida had the Avalon never come into existence.

The fart cannon is a bit too large and the boost gauge is in silly place but otherwise I like it quite a lot.

Ohhhhh, i gotcha.
Though i gotta nitpick you blaming the Avalon since it didn’t come along until the following generation.
I think we got two generations of Camrys without Avalons/Cressidas. But those two generations got the ES250/ES300.
Man. We are fucking nerds.

Yeah, I like the look of the HKS muffler better.

You’re right, there was a 2 year gap between the Cressida and Avalon. They continued the Cresta/Chaser/Mark II for about 10 years and 3 generations in Japan after they stopped selling it overseas, then combined them all into one car called the Mark X in 2004. The 2nd and 3rd generation IS’s are the same chassis as the Mark X, so we kinda-sorta have a Cressida descendent in the US again.

This is why I’m all about 90s. Just a simple, attractive design.

I actually like the look of the current Mark X, but they don’t sell them here. Oddly, the one manual version they sold (the 2015 GRMN) I could theoretically import via the Show Or Display law since there were only 100 made, but they’re far out of my price range.

I’m sure there are a few in Australia. I think I’ve seen the older ones. Over here, anything that wasn’t sold in this market is fair game.

Mechanically they’re pretty much the same as the 2nd and 3rd generation Lexus IS’s, but I just like how they look better. At least with the G’s front.
I got a solution to one of the biggest hurdles of owning a JDM import today when I went to pay my car insurance bill. The agent said he’d just insured an R32, but since the Skyline was never sold here it got insured as the closest thing that Nissan sold here (I’m assuming it was a Z32 but he couldn’t go into any more detail) and just made a note that it was a JDM import with a non-standard VIN but all matching info. So if I were to buy one of the JZX triplets it would most likely be insured as a Cressida, or maybe an Avalon or GS300 or possibly Supra or Camry. I’d prefer one of the first two...just imagining owning a built 600 HP JZX100 and paying $25 a month to insure it sounds wonderful.

If JZX100 prices get too stupid too quickly I may just settle for a manual GX100, then once it’s arrived, swap in a naturally aspirated 1JZ or 2JZ, and do an ITB all-motor build. It won’t be fast, but it’ll sound glorious.
