I think the snow may be done for the year in SW Ohio, and it is nice today so I went into full detail mode on my girlfriend’s daily. Pressure soap/rinse, hand wash/rinse and dry, followed by clay and Wolfgang 3.0 sealant. I’ve had 303 aerospace cleaner and thanks to Svend I found a use for it in the engine and WOW.
The one part of the detailing puzzle I need to learn is polishing. I’ll also be upgrading my supplies as well this year.

I need to svend mine but that requires getting up close and personal with all the bodywork issues which is just going to make me sad.

She bought this and I traded in for my new FoST On January 28, so we’ve only got to deal with normal road chips right now fortunately.

I have a few dents, a slightly crushed rocker panel, a split bumper, and a clearcoat blemish that’s doubled in size in the last month and needs to be nipped in the bud. Unfortunately I have neither the skill to fix them myself nor the money to get them fixed.

If you need or want any recommendations or some samples sent, let me know.
If polishing is new. Try the Gtechniq P1 Tri-foam kit.
It’s a water based pad dependant non diminishing polish. The kit contains 100ml of P1 polish, a tri-foam pad (firm on one side for cutting and a soft side on the other for finishing) and some microfibre cloths.
Here you can see Vassily doing the polishing while the director of Gtechniq Rob Earle gives a commentary and the camera work.

Good stuff, thanks! I’m hesitant just because I don’t want to do any significant damage but I’d probably try on an old beater first. What would you recommend for sealants? I’m using wolfgang but I’ve heard some things about Collinite as well.
Is there any less possibility of damage using a pad dependent? I’ve always imagined using a power polisher was the way to go, but I haven’t done my due research yet.

I wash my car weekly, or bi weekly as the weather gets shit (so Ohio winters). A full interior clean and dress happens every month or so, and a wax/seal the same unless again, shitty weather.

If you were anywhere near Cincinnati I’d do it for free. It’s just a hobby of mine and I happen to be a perfectionist.

I tend to do for Si02 based sealants as they are quick to apply, last ages, very durable and leave a lovely glossy finish.
I’ve heard great things about Collinite but I’m not a waxer so I can’t say from experience.
Paint and clearcote are usually about 120+microns deep, so allowing for 50/50, your clearcote that’s 60 microns deep. Now baring in mind even with an aggressive polish and a wool cutting pad, you’ll only take about 10 microns off tops. If your going to polish by hand use straight lines forward and back and then side to side.
With a pad dependant polish using a soft foam pad you really can’t do any damage at all really but is always a good idea to get a practice panel.
Polisher are great (I prefer to do it by hand, it’s harder going but I prefer it), if you start with a dual action polisher rather than a rotary, DAs are more forgiving. I usually recommend pad dependant polishes as there is a whole mine field of pad and polish combos for different paint hardnesses and what results your wanting to achieve.

I like wolfgang but I find it doesn’t seem to last very long. I’ll look into some pad dependent polishes; I think I’d prefer by hand as well.

As with any sealant or wax, it needs to bond with the paint, if there are any oils or residue on the paint the wax or sealant will bond to that and the durability will be lost.
Any issues in future. Use panel wipe or even better CarPro Eraser, it’s a panel wipe with which breaks down oils rather than shifting them about.

Wolfgang 3.0 sealant - Ooh fancy rich boy over here.
But seriously though they make really good products. Myself, a fan of Adams Buttery Wet Wax and Meguiar’s Mirror Glaze Sealant.

I need to try Adams. I’ve heard a lot of good things.
