What car would you pick if you wanted to build a custom cruiser? No standard fare, give me something unique and unusual. Even better, find me a pic of one that you chose.

Kinja'd!!!

Me? I’ve always wanted to rod an MGA. This one isn’t at all what I had in mind for mine, I’d go open wheel all around, fenders removed and the remaining bodywork glassed smooth for a streamlined tanker body look.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

What’s your unusual build?

They already built mine. This is exactly what ours looked like growing up.

I’ve always wanted to do a RWD and V8 conversion of one of my FWD DD’s. A PT cruiser would be pretty neat too.

I dig this. Not that the base is terribly unusual.

PT Cruiser.

Chop the front end off, channel the body, add a tunnel for the driveshaft and mount it on a rwd frame with a big v8 on the end.

Like this but substitute the PT for the Beetle.

Here’s a standard hot rod with an unusual power plant. I saw this at Charlotte AutoFair in 1996 or so. I remember riding home with my dad and a wheel bearing started to whine and smoke on the Cougar.

Although for my custom cruiser I’d rather have something like this:

Kinja'd!!!

Were money no object, it’d have a Hellcat/Auto drivetrain, white over red, with mahogany accents inside. I’d have an itty-bitty hellcat badge in the center of the grille, and a Hurst-300 winged decklid:

Chrome alloy wheels like this 300:

Thanks for the QOTD. I successfully wasted about 15 minutes at work.

I like this a lot. My friends and I always joke that when we’re all old men our retirement project will be hotrodding older Euro stuff just like this. The theme would be period correct OEM+ looking 80s/90s German and Japanese cars with wild engine swaps. 230SL with the 6.2 AMG V8 in it, 850CSI motor in a 633csi, etc.

No, it’s all for looks. I bet there’s no carrier in that front axle housing, and the pinion is just spinning into nothing.

Same car, two different ideas and almost did start one of these.

First idea was AWD EF Civic BUT with Subaru drivetrain. I had both the Civic and a wrecked Forester in my possession at one point which inspired the thought process.

Kinja'd!!!

Second Civic is V8 Civic ala Jeff Lutz Jr’s Drag Week Civic. I don’t think I would go full race car though. Just crazy sleeper.

I have an inexplicably strong desire to do something trollish with a hybrid platform. Thinking about this particular idea, I figured the only way it’d look good is if the nose was broght waaaaay forward and the rear underwent some substantial tubbing for drastically up-sized rear wheels and tires. At least one artist on the internet appears to share my sentiments.

Kinja'd!!!

Or I guess there’s this?

Renault Caravelle. This almost happened because there was soo much rust. Was going to put it on a TJ frame. Guess it would have been more gasser than hotrod

Hmm. I’m not entirely sure how I’d rod something. Maybe take a malaise era personal luxury car, drop the biggest diesel motor I can fit into it, and just go for more of a gasser look?

I’ve never thought about going for a hot rod - I’ve always been a fan of the clean, “lightly modded” look on the outside, with a well-maintained, moderately modified engine on the inside.

My hot rod tastes are pretty traditional, I’ve got a 1950 Ford F3 that I plan on building someday, and I’ve got a flathead laying around that I want to build and put into something eventually.

I’ve had a couple of non-traditional build ideas though, the first being any 30's couple or sedan, with traditional looks, but with a high strung turbo four out in the open, possibly with a really good suspension setup as well. The second idea is a ‘30 or ‘31 Ford truck, fully electric with solar panels built into the roof, and a removable solar panel bed cover.
