my cousin’s boss just got a new 2018 Sentra. In the owners manual the brake fluid needs to be flushed every 20k miles. This seems crazy.

Brake fluid is hydroscopic, which means is will absorb moisture from the atmosphere (and your master cylinder isn’t sealed from the atmosphere). Overtime that moisture will contaminate the fluid and significantly lower the boiling point. While this may be unlikely to matter in regular driving, it does in emergency stop situations, going down mountain passes or occasions of spirited driving.
Back in the 80's and 90's, it was common for European and Japanese manufactures to call for brake fluid to be flushed at fixed intervals of around a couple of years. It isn’t a bad idea and costs very little to do. At minimum, folks should be doing it with every pad and rotor change. When you get to racecars, it happens after every weekend, and sometimes after every session on the track.

if you bought a Sentra for spirited driving, you are doing something wrong.

Nissan has been having major problems with the braking systems in some of their cars as of late. As in they suddenly fail and you have none.
This is just a way of avoiding liability, both for failed parts and any injury or damage that may result.
21,000 miles on the clock, never changed your fluid, brakes fail and you hurt somone? You, Nisaan owner, are now 100% liable. I’d be surprised if your own insurance company doesn’t sue you for every penny to recoup their losses at that point.
Thanks Nissan!

I’ve done 291,000 km on mine. The brakes still work...

Well he did say...
emergency stop situations or occasions of spirited driving.
I mean we live in a world where leased base model luxury compact drivers exist.

Sure, but it wouldn’t change the maintenance requirements.

Right!? Who would wait that long!?

I was at a Nissan dealership and the advisor was telling someone to do this on there 20k service. I thought it was dealer bs but I guess not.

I’m glad i am not the only one surprised by this.

Am I the only one that does this twice a year? Along with the clutch fluid, if applicable? Yeah? Huh...ok....

Interval on my car is 3 years/ 37,500 miles (1 year in humid/mountainous areas).
I didn’t change it when I got the car, but I’m hoping it was done when the pads were changed before it was sold. That may be overly optimistic.
