Dinner somewhere nice tonight with my wife as a birthday present (but she won’t tell me where yet), work around the house tomorrow, and a birthday party for my nephew Sunday.
Should be a nice weekend - I could use the break from all the stress around here...

C&C with my dad and maybe ToddinTN tomorrow morn, then smoking tri tip for a friends wedding a good chunk of the afternoon. Might go to Midtown Nashville tomorrow night. Sunday I want to hang the cabinets in my garage but we will see if the wife or my Barbecue Team has other plans for me as she’s in charge and we have the first competition of the year next weekend. Oh, I’m also playing a 3v3 w/goalie hockey game Sunday night.

We try to do it a few times a year - - generally it’s for one of our birthdays, or our anniversary, and maybe once or twice beyond that.
Used to be a lot more frequent before our son was born, of course... :)

Just going back home. Traveling for work kinda sucks. It’ll be nice to see the wife and kids again! Oh, and I’ll probably have to mow. And work on cleaning out enough space in the garage so my son can set up the exercise bike. He’s now in physical therapy for his knee and they want him to ride like the wind - on a stationary bike.

I don’t know who came up with that mindset, but I’ve found that it’s just not true! If we did everything the Mama wanted, we’d all be stuck in the house and wearing bubble wrap jumpsuits just so she can have peace of mind that we are all safe and sound.

I’ve got half of it memorized. I think it remains as timely today. It shines an unblinking light on racism and bigotry. If it makes people uneasy, then there’s a reason for that unease.

We’ve got a band pancake breakfast, soccer games, and a trumpet lesson, all on opposite ends of the city. And that’s just Saturday. We’ll probably sit around on Sunday until everybody is sick of each other and then try to unplug the boys from the computers and go out. I hope the weather will be nice, but it’s been a cold, cloudy, nasty winter.

Our biggest problem is that we don’t have anybody to watch the kids. Our family is spread to the outer edges of the country. They are all old enough to be left alone for a couple of hours, meaning they could leave the house if it caught on fire, but they are also of the age where they will likely get in fights and destroy stuff while we are out.

In my experience as a musician, the second night is always the roughest. Opening night, everybody is keyed up and focused. Second night can often be a let down, since everybody thinks they don’t have to work as hard because the first night was good. Then things get back on track the third night. Ask just about any performer and they will confirm this.
Break a leg!

Mel Brooks as an early version of the social justice warrior. I wonder how many today would see him that way.

Not many. They would probably just see him as a dirty old man. For better or worse, the #MeToo movement is causing a whole lot of re-evaluation .

When we moved out to the suburbs, my wife insisted we move close to her parents. Since that’s also in between her work and mine, it was a no brainer. And they looooove spending time with their grandson, so it works out well for all of us.
It would be tough for us if we were away from family - my parents are about 90 minutes away, but they like to visit, too.

There is good about the movement. I fear we are throwing the baby out with the bath water sometimes.
People usually meet their spouse through work. Today, that’s problematic. My wife could probably have complained—in today’s environment—about the way I acted with her leading up to asking her on our first date. The key throughout history has been for the approacher to read the body language and statements of the approachee to decide how best to proceed, or whether to at all. I still feel the vast majority of people are capable of doing that. Unfortunately, because of the minority that can’t or won’t (e.g: Harvey Weinstein), we are replacing normal social judgement with rules, to the long term detriment of us all, I believe.

I basically stalked my future wife at college. Once I met her (we had actually gone to the same HS, but were two years apart and ran in different cliques), I figured out her schedule and started waiting for her to walk by. But, as you suggest, it was obvious that the attraction was mutual, and I eventually got drunk enough to gain the courage to ask her out (fortunately, the last soberish thing I did that night was make a note of the call before I hung up; she was surprised I remembered). How have we gotten to a point where it’s almost legally impossible to even talk to somebody, let alone flirt ?

Pretty much. Still, I had a conversation with one of my students yesterday where she said her husband had to pursue her for a good long time before she really noticed him. So, I guess our species still has hope for survival outside of dating services.

My goal this weekend beyond the usual cleaning, laundry and whatnot is to get the garage packed up. The garage is the last thing in the house (sans stuff we’re actually using in the next month) not packed up and ready to move. I got the last of the inside stuff and shed packed up last weekend. This moving thing is starting to feel really real. If time and weather allow, I’d also like to get a clean, detail and wax in on the F-150.

Moving sucks. I hope I never have to do it again. That said, I usually start packing about two months ahead of time. Good luck.
