THE FUTURE IS HERE

In terms of automobiles, slightly. In terms of political and social climate, not really.

I find it hard to believe that there was ever a good day (or decade) to be at LAX.

I’ve toyed with the idea of going classic again and my fiance is all for it but they really do drive like junk.

You can go modern frame and suspension in the case of the C2. Everything from stock frame reinforcement with C5 front suspension and C4 rear setup to a completely redesigned tube frame with custom IRS and reworked front... but then you’ve dropped over 10k into the chassis alone to have a car that probably handles no better than a C5.

That said, if anything could convince me to spend too much on a 50+ year old car, it would be a C2.

Fiance is more in favor of a 1st gen mustang or late 60's chevelle.

Must be a matte painting, I am not sure you could see the Theme Building through the smog from that distance in 1963.

Definitely in terms of design, that was approaching a zenith.

When your Chrysler needed a rebuild after 50,000 miles.

That can’t be real - there should be at least 1 million more cars at LAX.

Also, fuel injection FTW!!

The future is certainly not what it used to be. Maybe because as J.P. Hartley famously said, the past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.

(By the way, what a lovely example of Googie aesthetics as a background to the Vette’s shape: pure optimism!)

I want to go back to when the world was black and white.

It’s definitely a painting.

I’ve always been a Chevelle fan.

I wasn’t thinking LAX per se. It’s only a painting, so it’s more reflective of looking forward to a better future. And we all see how that has worked out....

At least we knew who our enemies were. And we didn’t have social media.

Yeah, now that I look closer, the fine detail isn’t too sharp.

Still a treat to see it on the rare occasion I am in LA.

Yup, fun times were had by all.

This is a really great picture, though.

As you mentioned somewhere else these days, what we lack now is a certain resolve, a certain idea that “yes, it can be done”.

Probably we are actually much closer to have the ability to fix lots of ills than ever before. But the drive to do so is seriously lacking in our decrepit, cosy first world society.

A few miles behind that car, Watts is on fire.

Yeah it’s just a background photo for the ad.

This is from the 70's but more indicative of what it would look like.

Cool pic, I will guess it is from around 1968 based on the newest cars I can spot.

There’s a C2 in it, too - bottom center, in front of a Karmann-Ghia.

This looks closer to the early sixties.

And now that I’m down the rabbit hole, I found these! The future certainly doesn’t let flight attendants stand on the wing anymore.

That makes sense, with how cars age better there. When estimating a pic, I find the newest car and add a year or so.

By the age of the cars in the b&w pic (I positively identify nothing newer than 1961), maybe that was taken when the building was freshly completed.

Correct...looks like the Theme building was completed in 1961, the photo is dated as ‘62.

I see many

“Yes but also (insert politics, discrimination, war, etc)“ comments.

While they’re right about all of it, I see no issue in fantasizing bygone design concepts because they are pretty good. Just don’t forget to keep the rest out of there!

However, copying old designs now comes out as gaudy and cliche (see: all of the bmw minis)

Interestingly, the 707 behind the red vette is 707 #1. It unfortunately crashed in 1965 in Montserrat.
