He smacked the curb so hard he made it bleed!

No, he doesn’t need new tires. He needs his licence taken away until they can learn how not to run into shit and keep up on vehicle maintenance.

$1000 does seem like a lot for 4 car tires. I got 4 MasterCraft all seasons for under $500 installed.

As a guy who just drilled a bunch of drain holes in old sidewalls yesterday (for a playground), some are very very thick. Especially the gouged one above, which has a rim protector strip. Others (cough Michelin Primacy) are paper thin. Almost scary.

Still, sidewall damage is a red flag for an immediate replacement. No questions asked.

Oh my god yes. That one with the chunk taken out is a massive weakness in the tyre wall and could on a pothole or on an aggressive bend.

The one with the bulbous tyre wall should be changed for the same reason.

Yeah, tires (specially high performance ones like the contis) are very expensive here... His actual quote was 32,000 pesos at a shop, but he bought cheaper Bridgestones online.

I know there is no upper bound to how much you can spend on tires.

He can just as easily curb cheaper tires to death. He needs high performance tires like I need another hole in my head.

EDIT: Also 32 kilopesos is 1.7 kilobucks!

I can’t seem to find them here for my car’s size.

I was looking at pzero rossos, but those are audi tires, does it matter if a tire has a manufacturer name on it?

Also... if I wanted more sidewall (say instead of using 255/35, using 255/40) would it matter a lot? I know the car would be a bit taller and less stiff, but I want both things.

I am genuenly scared because in about a year or two i’ll be looking the same way for my stinger, OEM equipment here are contisport 5s.

I’ll just get some prii-like hard as fuck, cheap as dirt tires so that I can oversteer everywhere.

Speedo is calibrated for a certain size, that is true.

Is there an ECU flash to fix that?

Surely there are something more affordable (is that price due to some weird tariff situation?). Continental in general is just a mediocre brand, IMHO. They make good tires, but 90% of then are just meh.

I’ve found much better, cheaper tires from Pirelli, Falken, Sumitomo, and Kumho. Definitely shop around, no need to stay with the OE tire. Even if you had to replace just one, buy something different and test it out for longevity :D

I’m looking at 50s now... I just want more sidewall because, even if I would cry myself to death if my rims got curbed, I wouldn’t want to have such low profile tires as the ones my kia has right now because I’m affraid of making mistakes...

Kinja'd!!! random001 > Spanfeller is a twat
02/28/2018 at 09:25

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah, it’s my go to site for anything wheel and tire related. So good.

More sidewall won’t necessarily give you any curb protection, just maybe pothole protection. For that, you’d probably want to look at putting 265's on, instead of 255's. Plug that in, and it’ll give you an indication of how much more bulge you get, but that is so tire dependent...

Just put mudders on and you’ll be good.

I don’t think those are the only tires.. it is a rather common size. The only problem is that the tires are staggered so when they wear off there wont be a “switch them around” case.

At the beginning they sucked, just loosing traction everywhere, but now the thing limiting my speed is probably the soft suspension and not grip.

My car I guess the average speed would be 30km/h in city trafic, but if I use the highway to get to university (which I do often) I normally average 140 on the highway or 160, on the private sections without speed cameras.

Pot hole protection is what I need the most probably. But those contis are a tight fit; certainly there’s space for wider tires.

Also, whatever makes my family feel less concerned about this oversteering rocket we bought is a plus.

Kinja'd!!! Spanfeller is a twat > CalzoneGolem
02/28/2018 at 09:35

More than oem or not, I’m limited by the cost of good tires here (3 or 2 times more than tirerack) and the availability of these tires.

Yes, like Michelin PSS. I ran those on my Corvette, and my Genesis. Best tires I’ve ever had for anything but snow, and I’m not sure you have much problem there.

Snow wont be a problem, but wet surfaces (with oils from the rest of the year surfacing) during the rain season are.

Kinja'd!!! Spanfeller is a twat > CalzoneGolem
02/28/2018 at 09:49

Kinja'd!!!0

Not really... I mean, I could get a PO box or perhaps have a broker handle the assholes at customs, but i’d probably pay a huge tariff on the tire (even if its american or european because aparently FTAs are only for businesses) and pay the broker themselves...

Kinja'd!!! Spanfeller is a twat > Future next gen S2000 owner

I had the same Conti’s on the Genesis, and that car would slide back and forth in any rain, to the point that I replaced those nearly brand new tires with the PSS because I was sure I was going to crash into something. The PSS felt almost the same in the wet and dry.

Yeah, he might be able... but I don’t think he’d be the kind of person who would like to run around in non OEM rims. Although at this rate of destruction, he might in a few years.

I think that non OEM rims look good on STis (cus the orignial rims don’t look that good) but its not normal for all cars...

Kinja'd!!! TahoeSTi > Spanfeller is a twat

OEM rims on my STi are 17s and I have several sets of the OEM BBS. Just find some OEM wheels on craigslist that aren’t 19s. That car had everything from 15-19 from factory find some 16s or 17s.

Unless he’s running a BBK, but even the wilwoods on my outback fit under the stock 17s
