I am in Salinas, where I do a fair amount of business. I lived here for almost two years, pursuing a disastrous partnership in my first effort to own my own firm. To make a long story short, I got screwed by a guy I considered a mentor, a person far craftier and more ruthless than me. At the time, I felt lucky to escape with my sanity.

I don’t like this town. It is a shitty place, and I probably have some PTSD triggers here. It reminds me that of late, my enemies have had the better of me. I need to get the Sunchaser suspension done so I can take it on long trips. I would feel better in that car.

“It reminds me that of late, my enemies have had the better of me.”

Considering that you and your wife have a genius exit strategy/escape/retirement plan, I’d say you have the upper ground. Those guys can try whatever, you’re gonna come out top because you’ll keep control of things actually worth caring about.

Your enemies may of got the better of you, but you are and always will be better than them.

Your doing well, haven’t had to stoop to their level and have a great family to show for it.

I don’t mean to be rude in any way because your background with the place sounds tragic, but if we’re honest Salinas is just a generally shitty place for everyone—a speed bump before Monterey and a pit stop for Pinnacles.

Oh. you have perspective. Don’t get into battles with sociopaths if that is not your nature.

Whatever the result, you got a cheap education in the end compared to how bad it could have turned out.

Take solace in knowing karma’s a bitch and it will work out. Be true to yourself and don’t worry too much about the score.

Take solace in the knowledge that although you both may be attorneys, he’s a scumbag with no ethics, morals or anyone who can trust him. You, though a fierce litigator, are a better than decent human being. You’re better off without him, and it was good to learn that sooner rather than later. Imagine where your head would be now if you were still attached by the hip to his bullshit.

Plus, you have a 1981 Sunchaser. He doesn’t, and dare I say couldn’t own a nicer one, even if he were to piss away his ill gotten fortune trying.

Today, after feeling blue for many days (weeks) in a row now, the sun was shining and it warmed up to the high 50's. I went on a nice drive and I felt so much better afterwards. The problems you face will certainly pass. Talk about it with your wife, or your kids. What I’m learning as I go through this rough patch, is just talking to people who care about you is so damn helpful.

Last night I was deep in the gutters mentally, called my brother up and just let it all out to him. I felt so much better afterwards. Just seeing how much he cared and wanted to help me feel better immensely helped my mood. Had lunch with him today and nearly started crying when we hugged. I promise, it’ll all get better (that’s what I’m tellin myself!) and soon enough all of this trouble will have just made you much stronger and more wise.

I’ve been feeling pretty down in the dumps about teaching lately. It just isn’t going well at all this year.

Tonight as I was stuck in traffic a former student texted to see if I’d come see his percussion concert tonight. I did, and it was wonderful.

It really helped to see that even if it’s all gone to hell lately, once upon a time I did something right for this kid. And I know you have people whose worlds you have 100% improved...including your own kids. You could be a dad who doesn’t give a shit, but instead you’re a Dad who cares so much that you’re internalizing their struggles.

Colorado rocks, btw. Most of it, at least.

Shit happens. Learn from it and move on. If we dwelled on our mistakes we’d all be driving a Camry.

Agricultural labor is just another marker for America having shot some of its toes off...

What doesn’t kill you, makes you stronger. You learned a lesson not taught by school teachers. You are now wiser.... thanks to that mentor.

Sure... it’s a shitty way to learn, but that’s just how life teaches you.

In automotive language, you are driving down the road and your engine seizes. Lesson learned - check oil level periodically.

Funny how priorities change. I submitted my resignation two weeks ago for what 25-year-old me would have thought was THE dream job. Having a sick child is very effective at stripping away all the things that, in the end, don’t really matter. Kudos to you for holding on to what does matter. I heard somewhere “wisdom is gained from experience, which means you get it right after you needed it.” True so far.
