I get to play around with a wind tunnel for a day but
what should I test?
My first reaction is to find out if tailgate up is better than tailgate down on a pickup-truck at speed.
The wind tunnel is capable of super high speeds and they can do any temperature between -60 and +50 C.
I’ll post up the results when complete, will likely happen early March.

Popup headlights before/after? Closed hood/released hood/improperly latched hood. Can you close a gas tank door with wind from a wind tunnel? The time I would waste in there...

The tailgate test has already been done. Tailgate up won.
...but no one has ever tried the test with the pickup facing backwards to simulate high speed reversing. Try a tailgate up/down pickup reversing simulation and break some new ground!

Tailgate up/down has already been done .
My first inclination would be to test whether funky aerodynamics cause that floating feeling in old cars at high speed. Seems to me that a lack of downforce is a primary suspect. Does the wind tunnel have the equipment to test downforce at each wheel at +130 mph wind speeds?

Didn’t Mythbusters already test the pickup-truck tailgate?
Maybe roof up vs down on a convertible?

In general, how do fender benders affect airflow?

What does one of those ridiculous ‘combat wings’ actually do to a car’s aerodynamics?
If you are set on testing a truck, try gate up, gate down, gate off, baha mesh gate and tonneau. Compare and contrast.

Mythbusters did the tailgate so don’t bother. It’s better up, it creates a pillow of circulating air in the bed that oncoming air bounces off. A lowered gate created a drop in air over the cab that made more drag bouncing off the bottom of the bed.

Tailgate up vs down has been done to death. I’d suggest doing some DIY aero mods and seeing how efficient you can make something. DIY fender skirts, slick wheel covers, taped panel gaps, pro stock style spoiler/wing, undertray, but all done on the cheap.
