The DeLorean is one of the coolest and more interesting cars that have been built. The fact that it only ever gets mentioned in the context of a cheesy sci fi movie with a dorky set of gadgets glued to the back seems like a waste.
I like the movies but the car is an unpainted, gorgeous, gullwinged dream of one man and with the rare and terrifying RR layout. It’s interesting on its own merit.
IIRC dear Mr Regular has driven a number of these cars including one with an LS swap. Maybe I’ll go bathe in those vids.

Cars, fortunately or unfortunately, become solely associated with certain roles. For example, any silver DB5 is going to be referred to as Bond’s car, which seems to be a lot of a disservice. Likewise, the Esprit will frequently thought of as a submarine, the Charger will always be associated with the General Lee, and the R34 will forever be pined for by guys with frosted tips and who think they’re hot shit at driving.

It was always going to be an interesting car, now it’s just a popular interesting car as opposed being confined to a niche car nerds car. Owning it is owning both of those realities.

Originally the only thing that set this car apart was the stainless steel and gullwing doors. Other than that I’m told it “wasn’t very good”. With a lackluster V6 and ho hum suspension, all it did was look cool. The movie made it really special, and embedded it with a coolness factor beyond all imagination. I’m sure Robert Zemecks had no idea the impact his choice would have for the future of that car! There is no getting away from the sterotype for that one.
I think it was a pretty cool car. I’m probably one of few who knew what it was before the movie came along. It was a few years before I could drive but I was an avid reader of magazines like motor trend, automobile, hot rod etc.

I was talking about this the other day with some friends. The DeLorean probably would have not been as famous as it is today without Back to the Future, it would be confined to the history books like the Bricklin SV-1 before it as a niche car made by a man with a dream. I say BTTF helped its popularity tenfold.

I mean, people still remember the SV-1. Most of them are from New Brunswick and pissed about being conned, but still.

I’ve always wondered if you could stick a boxer motor in the back of one of these like an 80s space age Porsche. Let me see if I can pull up some specs for the engine bay...
edit-but-not-really: Can’t find engine bay dimensions, but given the fact that the bay seems to barely fit a 90 degree V6, I think boxers may be out of the question...

A vr6 would be such a nice match, sound and speed wise, for this chassis

Its the same reason you can’t talk about chargers, 70s trans ams, 80s trans ams, or gmc vans. cause it was in a movie or tv.

You are correct, but I’d argue all of those cars pale in historical significance to the DeLorean. It’s a true snowflake in the history of the car, but nobody cares

You’re probably right. But that only makes it more interesting! Like the SV1 it’s a weird and noteworthy part of the history of the car.
Not just some movie prop

It wasn’t good but that’s mostly the lack luster engine. And perhaps the build quality, expected of such a low production car. I think the styling is awesome and the doors are very unusual, and rear mounted engines in sports cars are always worth mentioning.
It would certainly be less popular if not for the movies. But still cool as shit

How is it significant? No offense met, it is certainly unique but I don’t think it inspired anything

I thought they were cool before the BTTF movies. I never drove one, I’m just told they weren’t very good driving cars. I don’t know how “isn’t very good” compares to similar sized cars of the 80's anyway...

That’s a very positive way to look at it
