More?

Please.

As far as I can tell, Toyota took the Dyna truck (which, I think we get in wide body form as the Hino 155 and 195 - this is the narrow body version, though), and mated it to a 1989-2004 HiAce body.

I saw a Toyota van today that looked very much like the stuff in Japan I see, left side drive too. I thought it was an import that you see people from WA and OR get from Canada but it was new and no plates yet??? I saw it in San Jose. Are they bringing this type of van here now?

Missed an opportunity to call it the DynaAce... or DynAce...

I dunno. I can think of a couple good uses for that.

Worth noting that the ToyoAce is the same thing as the Dyna, but for sale through a different dealer network.

(Because, you see, Toyota has the GM syndrome, of having to rebadge products eleventy billion different ways, to satisfy the Toyota, Corolla, Toyopet, Netz, Lexus, Hino, and Daihatsu dealer networks. So, Toyota gets the Dyna, and Toyopet gets the ToyoAce.)

Weird, because they aren’t...

Last time Toyota brought a cabover van was the 1984-1989 Toyota Van, based on the TownAce/MasterAce, AFAIK.

Toyota’s only US-market van right now is the Sienna, which ain’t Japanese-style in any way, shape, or form.

It’s really the whole thing where the cab and the rest of the body completely don’t match, because they were designed 22 years apart. (And they did the same thing on the previous generation, too.)

Yeah, this looked like a basic rectangular Japanese Toyota van. I don’t get it.

I don’t understand this post but I do appreciate the random allusion to Star Trek Generations

These trucks in box van configuration are commonly used as hearses in Hong Kong.

Yeah, that is kind of a trigger. They have some lines matching up but not others. It would better if it were all one or the other.

Yep. Hino sells a version of it as the Dutro Route Van, while Toyota’s is the Dyna Route Van.

Kinja'd!!!

Isuzu had a Route Van version of the Elf, too.

When did they stop making the Hiace?

just noticed it’s been replaced with the Proace.

Which isn’t really close.

Ones a cab-over and the other is just a small-medium sized van.

They didn’t, they just stopped selling it to Europe after 2012.

(And apparently the 1996-2012 European HiAce was actually the Granvia, which wasn’t cabover?)

Kinja'd!!!

And the ProAce is a rebadge of the Citroën Jumpy/Peugeot Expert.

I knew about the rebadge but not the Hiace thing.

I still see the Hiace about.

HiAce is still available here.

Toyota Australia won’t let that go down without a fight, like the 70-series LC.

We get the Mitsubishi FUSO Canter and the Nissan Cabstar still.

But I get there isn’t much need or want for a cab-over vehicle of that size.

They switched from the traditional forward control one because of (I think) safety considerations although it’s still sold elsewhere. They then abandoned the Hiace entirely for the European market because the sales weren’t high enough to justify meeting emissions regs.
