“You know, upcoming employment means I could afford a new car payment. $5k down, $350 a month, that sounds not too bad. Plus, Mazda3! And it’s new! Nothing could go wrong with that!”

“But wait, Chevy makes a hatch too! And it’s diesel! And it comes with a manual! And it would cost about the same! That seems like a good idea!”

Or I’ll just buy a used thing to drive until I pay off my student loans, because an extra $300 a month towards that would be a very wise idea. I hate this damn dichotomy of responsibility and recklessness. But a new car sounds awesome.

Go a couple years old with low miles and split the difference. Get a newer car and pay off loans.

Buy used. Especially if you’re going with the Cruze.

They lose so much value it’d be a better used buy.

Do what you can to pay off the student loans. No car can compare with the feeling of paying off the last dollar of your student loans.

I mean, the Mazda3 looks pretty nice too, though.

$10k is not a lot of debt left. Congrats on that. Sprint for the finish and then buy a 3 lightly used when you’re free and clear of the loans.

Thanks, but I didn’t really have that much to begin with (thanks, being Canadian!). But in any case, I’m going to have to buy something in September, I just don’t know what I’ll need yet.

328s are a pretty great used car deal. Although if you put on a lot of miles the fuel economy will kill you. My Xdrive gets 28 on a very good day. Usually more like 22. And that premium so cost wise it’s the same getting 17-22 with regular 87. Ouch

The Cruz is nice for a chevy but it’s not as nice to drive as the 3. I do give the Cruze kudos for their infotainment system.

I have to say, the Chevy infotainment setup is quite good. Leagues ahead of Sync, in my opinion.

The one in the Mazda is very disappointing. The whole thing runs on a dial on the center console. Then the screen is just like an iPhone stuck to the top of the dash.

It’s a solid plan. Hopefully you don’t have too much further to go. I’m a bit over halfway there.

Sidenote: I feel like the cheap one out of my siblings, as both my sisters have Master’s degrees, one sister is getting a second one, and the other is in teacher’s college, so I’m the only one who’s actually paying off their loan right now. I’m really curious to see how much they both owe at the end of this.

Well, while our debt stinks I have to say it was worth it. I could be debt free with no education, then what would I do? I’m not a particularly skilled tradesmen, or any kind of entrepreneur. I’ve been fairly half-glass-full from day one because we made our bed and now we have to live with it :P

I wonder if it’ll be cheaper than mine per mile over time. I’ve driven maybe 2,000 miles and have put a lot into it already withmaintenance and cosmetic work. Although I doubt I’ll ever need another timing belt service. I’ll never live long enough to drive this another 100,000 miles.

Hey man, I agree with you there. My degree and the experience that came with it are probably the only reason why I got the job I’m in now, and probably why my next employer took me at a younger than average age. So yeah, it blows, but it builds my credit and helped me grow as a person in many ways, since I’d probably still be at the box factory if I didn’t go.
