"Chariotoflove" (chariotoflove)

Coming back from my daughter’s swim meet, my tire blew out on I30. I had to drive a bit to pull over safely, and I hope the rim isn’t damaged.
Within 30 seconds of getting out to see the damage on the highway shoulder, an off duty cop, off duty deputy, and two others guys stopped to help just as I was pulling out my jack and spare. Guess a guy in a wheelchair on the road side is kinda conspicuous. A couple minutes later, a tollway assistance truck pulled up too. So all told, I had my own impromptu pit crew changing my tire. Sometimes people are really cool. Much better than waiting for AAA.

Glad to see there’s some humanity left in people.

That’s awesome!
If you don’t mind me asking, how would you have gone about changing it yourself? Pardon me if you’ve already posted about it somewhere, but I’m just not familiar with the extent of your wheelchair situation.

Yeah, it made me feel great even while feeling bad about the car. Also, extra feels:
The off duty cop was in this Challenger painted with all kinds of superhero stuff. He uses his vacation time to travel to see kids with cancer and dress up as different superheroes. He said he was on his way to a party to play Iron Man for a kid in Rowlett.

It’s cool. I’m paraplegic, specifically T6 motor complete. I use a lightweight titanium chair. I would have gone about changing it with the hand jack like anyone else, because I was feeling ornery. The only thing that pisses me off more than being stranded is feeling helpless, and I was not going to put up with that. I’m not gonna lie though, before it was done, I would probably have pulled a David Banner. I wasn’t sure how successful I was going to be. It was a relief that people stopped to help.

For sure. I can only imagine how infuriating it would have been for you if you had started tugging on the wrench only to find that some shop had overtorqued the lug nuts!
