I think my affinity for the $9,988 Micra is well established at this point. But, now that Europe has their own new, more complicated, more expensive, and less shoebox-on-wheels-y Micra, I’m not sure how much longer the current Micra will be sold in Canada. That means there needs to be a replacement, considering the not insignificant niche that Nissan has carved out in the ultra-cheap car segment.
So what’s another ultra-cheap car sold by Nissan?
Good news!
The Dacia Sandero, of course! Now, I grant you, ceci n’est pas un Nissan . C’est un Dacia . But who owns Dacia? Renault. Who has been in a joint venture with Nissan since 1999? Also Renault. A Nissan Sandero would make a lot of sense in Canada. We like cheap cars here. Hell, you might not even have to badge it as a Nissan, just bring Dacia here and sell them at willing Nissan dealers.
If the Dacia brand was brought over here, we could also have the newly-refreshed Duster, which would quite figuratively print money.
Think about it, Nissan.

There’s also this... thing.
https://www.datsun.com/vehicles/new-vehicles/go.html
But I highly doubt it’ll meet safety standards in Canada.

Yeah, I’m gonna pass on the Go.

I would love to see the Sandero or Duster here, I love me some cheap, no frills, reliable cars! :)

What happened to the $3000 car they were supposed to be building?

I should also mention I have a self-loathing of Nissan right now. I really hope they bring the new Micra over to at least add a little difference to their line up considering they are going crossover crazy. They have the Rogue, the Kicks, the Qashqai...which, unless I am mistaken, are all roughly the same size?

Couldn’t you just get, you know, the new Micra? It’s made France, the Québécois should be pleased.

The main selling point of the current Micra is that it’s the cheapest thing you can buy. I wouldn’t be surprised if the new Micra did come here, but if it did it would probably replace the Note instead of the current Micra.

The old adage applies: Light, Cheap, Strong. Pick Two.
Nissan has made their pick.
By the way, you forget that Renault Nissan now includes Mitsubishi as well...

I see quite a few Dusters here in South Texas with Mexican plates. There is no way they would come close to $10k CAD. They are too big and even the base model is a little too nice. It would probably come in around $16k CAD minimum. The Sandero could do it. In Mexico it starts at the equivalent of $13k CAD. Nissan could probably get a base model to $9999 if they really wanted to keep that sub $10k price point for marketing.

As it happens, the new Micra has replaced both the Note and the old Micra.

The Kicks (length: 4,29m - width: 1,76m) is actually based on the Micra, so it’s smaller than the Pulsar-based Cashcow (length: 4,37m - width: 1,8m)

Didn’t realize it was Micra based......would still prefer the Micra. Also, the Juke was better because at least they tried. The Kicks just looks generic. :(

Definitely, wasn’t expecting the Duster to be as cheap as the Micra. But it would probably significantly undercut basically every other crossover.

Someone had to do it.

It would. It’s larger than a Trax, Ecosport , or Kicks and around $3-4k cheaper. The hardest thing for Nissan would be that it’s prertty similar dimensionally to the Rogue Sport and it might be awkward marketting both.

The Logan might get down to Micra territory, though (if not lower). If you’re talking Dacia, you might as well bring that into the discussion.

I mean, it’s not like the Qashqai and Duster aren’t already sold in Europe. And there’s the Renault Kadjar too. And the Mitsubishi ASX too.

What’s the ASX called up there? In the US it is Outlander Sport. And I think some places call it the RVR. Anyway, it’s probably the closest thing to the Duster on the market. Similar size and cheap. Here in the US the MSRP is around $20k but I see them on sale for $15-16k all the time. The issue I see is more that unless they brought a new brand to Canada it would be though to market as a Nissan. In Europe they have the Dacia brand being lower-spec across the board so it’s easy to market a larger car for cheap. If they sold it as a Nissan in Canada it would be awkward, though not impossible, to have two nearly identical sized crossovers with a $5k+ base price gap in the same showroom.

It’s the RVR here.

i wish they’d bring them here to Australia
