As the title says, a man bought a 1959 23 window Samba VW bus for $135,000 at a recent Mecum auction. He shares his new purchase with The Samba, and that’s when it gets interesting.

Not actual bus, but this photo was better than his

The forum first starts asking about the indicator semaphores, since they are out of place on a USDM bus of that year. It continues on for 11 pages (so far) asking for more photos, and experts rip it apart and identify every bit of the bus that is NOT from a 1959.

23 Window buses trade for a lot more money than their lesser-window brothers, and it appears this one was cobbled together and converted to a 23 window bus.

Not sure if Mecum is going to help him or not.

Must keep reading.

Do all VW buses have anti-camber on the rear wheel?

Looks like someone else ripped it apart long before the forum did.

Yup. They had swing axles, camber was variable to how loaded the suspension was.

They all have swing axle suspension until at least 1969.

Agreed. I’m a few more pages into it, and wow.. what a mess.

Even if that was a genuine 23-window, Mecum should have never let that piece of shit go over their block.

Wow.

My fintail has a swing axle, and does the same thing sometimes. Now and then, people notice it.

This is about what I would expect from Mecum, never had a good vibe - seems like a drunk bidding/pissing contest venue for rich boomers.

I’ve read a fair number of stories that make it clear that Mecum is very much buyer beware. They don’t back up what goes across the block really at all.

Having attended the Chicago auction last fall, there’s a real mix of gorgeous cars and more than a few that are merely pigs with lipstick. You have to do your homework if you’re going to be a serious bidder.

That was quite interesting thread. The lawsuit isn’t going to progress very quickly so I guess it’s going to take a while before we see how this ends.

The boomer bidding war happens at all the auctions. I’ve seen non-special editions of cars go for ridiculous money because it happens that two guys bidding on it happened to propose to their wives 50 years ago in that green base-model Mustang.

Just sayin’, paying $135k for a VW Bus goes against absolutely everything the hippie-dippies who made those popular in the first place stood for.

The hippie-dippies are in charge now, so people change.

I suppose B-J would be just the same, yeah. The televised auctions are always amusing, and I can’t imagine buying most of that material even if I had the money.

There’s one for sale in Australia that’s had a roof transplant. Wildly expensive and it’s not even real.
