I see that every day. As long as the CHMSL is working, I’m okay. It’s when the CHMSL fails, things get difficult.

Most states have zero safety inspections after the initial purchase. And a minority have no inspections at all (emissions, etc). I’m one of them. However, the police can pull them over and cite them for brake lights or bald tires, but it’s rare.
Thankfully most people voluntarily keep their cars in good shape, but some of the stuff I’ve seen should be illegal.
It’s due to a strange combination of left wing “too much burden on the poor!” and right wing “government should stay out of my business!” mentalities.

That is weird to me. Everyone benefits if cars are safe, not just the owners of the car. I don’t want to rear end someone because his brake lights don’t work and I also don’t want someone crashing into me because his brakes/tires whatever failed.
Other than the maintenance every car owner should keep up on anyway independent of income (lights, brakes, tires, suspensions, steering) the actual inspection shouldn’t cost much at all.
Preaching to the choir, I guess :)
