The guy is a board member of the local Military Vehicle Preservation Association chapter and is also a high school auto shop teacher. So we met at his school and he put it up on the lift to point out some things to me. So some pics are references for me and not exciting. He has the 4.89 gears I will be swapping into mine this summer, so I got to try them out. I will need to practice my double clutching for 3rd to 2nd while the truck is moving, he says they are all slightly different and when I get my truck going I just have to learn the quirks.

That’s the largest wheel weight I’ve ever seen.

Nice truck

haha, I have weights like that on my ‘61 Ford, and the wheels still aren’t quite right. I know it’s the tires, but yeah. My local shop said about balancing them, “...yeah... they spun up... horrible. We tried.”

That looks fantastic. I mean, it looks about where I’d like my truck to be in 10 years. I could spend $10k pretty easily - I mean, theoretically - and still not have it be that clean all around. That was a good buy.

The rims on all these military trucks are pretty wobbly, the shop we were in has a wheel machine that puts weight on it and then can take into account the tire as well. I assume he used that machine since it’s the shop he uses. He put a rim on the machine and spun it up to show me how they are.

This isn’t my truck, this is the guy from the association. He has spent a few years on it. Mine will be painted pretty soon.

Well not technically split rims, they have a locking ring on the outside edge, they actually called them safety rims because they were an improvement, they have a groove and the outer ring hooks over it and then when inflated it’s locked. The WWII combat rims bolted around.

Those are still plenty dangerous if you’re not careful and the lock ring/groove aren’t clean and rust free.

Nice pics, thanks for sharing. I’d have to paint those shocks if it were my truck though... black would be fine, OD green, even primer red like the transfer case would be better than ford blue.

Yeah I was thinking that too but I didn’t say it! Only a couple fit these right. I will paint mine if they end up like that.
