$200 max. And that’s because it comes with a 3 speed saginaw. Basically $150 for the trans and $50 for the engine.

That’s kind of what I’m thinking. I’m looking for a used 250 though that’s serviceable enough to rebuild. Any ideas?

For $750, it better come with a whole car or truck.

A few questions:

1.) Sorry but I have to ask. Any particular reason why you are sticking with the I6? Just asking because V8s can be a dime a dozen and parts availability is off the chart. Hell, I’ve given away a few good condition 350 short blocks I didn’t feel like dealing with. Not trying to persuade you at all- just curious.

2.) What’s wrong with your current I6?

3.) What would you consider salvageable off of your current engine? Has it been torn down and inspected?

CP all the way. Like crowmolly, I’ve given away a SBC that was rebuildable. You can get a decent one for a couple of hundred.

Good questions.

1. When I was a young one, my stepfather had a ‘32 Ford roadster that he raced and that had one of the 235 I6s from the Pontiac Tempest. I seem to think he got 104 mph in the quarter mile with it once. Since then, I’ve always wanted to build an I6 of my own. More than 40 years. And with a manual transmission. I wanted true split headers, but my consultant, the old guy, says they’re bad because they give off lots of head and you lose the intake manifold heating. But exhaust is a story unto itself... Have you seen the pics of my project? www.tinyurl.com/vandurapics I bought the van stock from the original owner a year ago with 80k on the clock for $1800. A very old guy who’d bought the van for his wife and his wife had died.

2. The current one runs seemingly pretty well and ostensibly only has 80k miles on it. My thinking is that I’ll spend a year or three rebuilding another engine to replace the current one whose condition I’m still not sure of.

3. IDK. It starts and runs and drives and so far, that’s all I know.

I wouldn’t have thought a Saginaw 3sp would have any value at all.

1.) Good enough reason! Because I want one is the best. Yea, I’ve been following your posts on here pretty regularly.

2+3.) I’d see if you can find a 250 locally that’s a decent core. Maybe call some junkyards or machine shops in your area. IIRC you’re in CA so you have a better chance than most. A machine shop might already have it tanked, maybe even magged. Then you can take your time giving it a nice paint job and building it up piece by piece.

They’re different. And I’ll have a 5 sp behind it.

I’ve never build an engine, but I have lots of general mechanical experience and I’ve watched lots of YouTube and Roadkill and with some solid mentoring, I feel confident that I can do a solid job of it.

Q: Do people still use Plasti-Gauge for bearing shimmage?

Dirt or tar. They only run two gears-and I’ve seen these trans around on the circle track marketplace sites I go to. First add I found. https://www.facebook.com/groups/241627779201663/permalink/1780207012010391/?sale_post_id=1780207012010391
