That as a furriner who doesn’t “get” the gun control debate or have an axe to grind in it, it’s really nice to be able to come here and read several gun control threads which, unlike everywhere else on the damned internet, involve people reasonably exchanging different viewpoints and not going straight to “Fuck You!” “NO, FUCK YOU!!!”

It’s very frustrating to try to engage people who are hard down on either side into a real discussion and share points of view. It always seems to turn into “NOBODY SHOULD HAVE GUNS” or “AR-15s ARE NOT FULLY AUTOMATIC YOU SHOULDN’T BE ALLOWED TO SPEAK” or “ARM EVERYONE TO THE TEETH AND LET EM RIP MURCA FUCK YEAH”. It seems like all political discussions have completely derailed to ‘all in’ or ‘fuck em all’ and there is no in between anymore. Therefore we are doomed.

What’s really depressing is that in pretty much any major political argument, and I bet this one too, 99% of the population would be fine with any reasonable compromise that let them get on with their lives and raise their kids in peace. It’s just that the 1% capture the conversation.

To me, it comes down to this:

People on the left say it’s an issue of gun control.

People on the right say it’s an issue of mental health.

Why does it have to be exclusive to one or the other? Both issues seem to be entirely relevant to this admittedly difficult problem. I’m not a gun owner, never have been, never had a strong desire to be. But I wholly acknowledge that practically every single gun owner I know is absolutely responsible with their implements of destruction.

Where I do draw the line, however, is the idea of arming school teachers. I will unequivocally say that is a horrible, terrible, no-good idea. I don’t have the answers to fix this, but I swear with every fiber of my being that this is not the solution.

I just gave an example, it means when someone is being sarcastic about something, like when he said we are nice in political posts when yesterday we were all jerks to each other in my post, and when it’s non-explicitly directed at someone who did exactly what he said people didn’t do.

Yes yes, that I got. I still contend that it makes no sense. Shade is a breakdown for the collapse of probability functions for photon emission from object of mass. You can’t throw a probability function, unless you throw a textbook on probability functions, but that is hardly the same thing, now is it?

Actually, no, I wasn’t online yesterday and didn’t see that one. I was being serious - it continues to surprise me how well behaved Oppo (usually) is for a lightly moderated forum. There were about three guns threads today, none of which went south. Which is about three more than anywhere else on the interweb that’s not a single-viewpoint echo chamber.

I’m totally with you on arming teachers. Dumbest idea since they invented dumb ideas.

I find it really hard to buy the mental health argument, to be honest. The US doesn’t have a monopoly on crazy or depressed people: your suicide rate, which is as good a metric as anything, is about the same as France, Sweden, or New Zealand. But somehow nobody else’s crazy people seem to shoot folks with the same frequency yours do. From the outside, it’s hard to believe that doesn’t have something to do with the fact that they can...

I’m not sure that gun control’s the answer though - it may well be too late for that.
