I have the potential to acquire a ‘96 Honda Passport for $500- it’s apparently in good shape, and runs strong. What think the oppo hivemind?

$500 for a running driving car is “fuck it, it can’t be that bad” territory. NP

Total CP.
You can get a brand new one for $135.

Better than the pre-Honda partnership Isuzus - I worked with a lady that had one, only issues she had were suspension bushings (oddly) and power window/lock, etc switches kept going out. And they have no headroom.

That price is still pretty high compared to the Rodeo, which is basically the same thing.

I wouldn’t buy it. They’re not reliable. It’s not the purchase price, it will be the ongoing repairs and maintenance.
If your budget is only $500, look for a used Toyota Tercel/echo/Yaris/Corolla.

From my somewhat brief research, it seems the power window switches failing is one of the most common problems on these.
I’m not particularly tall, so I doubt headroom will be a problem.

“Don’t call me an Isuzu”
Mhm. Suuuuuure.

I could go above $500, this is just an opportunity that happened to fall in my lap.

Hey, the different badges and body-color C pilar make this a COMPLETELY different car from an Isuzu Rodeo. No relation whatsoever.

It’s no Amigo, but for $500 why not? Worst case I’d imagine that you could part it or scrap it and not lose out.

10/10 would highly recommend. My coworker has one at nearly 300k and my dad has one still less than 100k but not one single problem.

Have spent more on a dishwasher. Would rather have the Honda. You are in prime beater range- watch how much you put into it and you will be fine.

I had one of those, only it said isuzu on the side instead of honda. I really liked it, but it was a “new car” back then, maybe 8 years old and relatively low miles.

I mean for $500, why not? If it will make it home.
From my experience it’s pretty hard to find a decent running car for $500, but a lot of other people seem to think it’s really easy because they see cheaper cars on craigslist. If they actually saw the vehicles in person they would understand why they are only $500. 9 times out of 10 you’ll have to spend another $300, before you attempt to drive it more than 2 miles. Like for a new battery, tires that hold air, etc.

I had a 95.5 Rodeo - the same thing as that Passport.
The auto hubs are poo but Warn makes (or did make) manny lockers that are great and easy swaps
The 3.2 is a clicky clacky motherfucker but is a stout little engine with decent power and a nice wide band. The 2.6 is an engine, by definition
The 5-speed is so nice. The automatic is a GM 4L30 and is exactly what you’d expect
The Passport came with either a GM or a Dana/Spicer 44 rear. Guess which one is the good one
For $500, I’d buy it. I liked my Rodeo and just finished refurbing and donating a 2000 Rodeo to my friends in need

I have never been under one that wasn’t leaking trans fluid, but could be a fun beater for $500

This is really a $2k car I’m getting for cheap because the seller just wants to offload it. I’m betting on it at least needing tires and some rubber components replaced though.

Dude, buy it. These take beatings and run a real long time. You could make money selling it if you end up not liking it. Hell, if u were local I’d buy it off u lol.

Oh and the stock tires are 215s I think? WAYYYY TOO SKINNY. First thing I did was swap for some 30/10.50s and damn did it make all the difference in the world

If it’s in decent shape, $500 is why not money.
It’s a Rodeo.

I’ve always liked them, but have also heard of them referred to as “the most unreliable Honda” as they’re essentially a Rodeo. Also they’re not the most unreliable Honda, that honor goes to the Honda Crossroad .
