I’m on a never ending quest to spend money, I really want a new boat. My current boat is going soft. It’s time for it to go. I’ve found this leftover from 2016, and I can get a pretty amazing deal on it but I’m hesitant to pull the trigger. It’s been sitting awhile. Seals go. Tires stop being round. It’s never been registered, it is technically a new boat.

I’m pretty sure I can get this for the price of a decently used older boat.

It checks all the boxes, does everything I need it to do. I have a quote but I’m pretty sure I can get down from the quote the dealer gave me.

Any one have experience with holdover models? Am I just being paranoid?

it’s a 2016, so it was sitting for just 2 years, can’t be worse than parts sitting in a box for 10-20 years.

Maybe. Bearings aren’t getting oil, pistons aren’t moving, gas is breaking down, oil is breaking down. If a car sat for two years would you just jump in and fire it up?

Any boat north of about the 35 latitude line spends several months of the year, if not more like 9 months, unused in storage. Boats especially have to be made to sit unused even during the season, far more than cars do. I wouldn’t worry too much about the mechanical aspects of it. The steering cable might go a bit sooner than it would have.

My question is, why didn’t it sell? This is like, the V6 mid-sized SUV of boats - it would serve 99% of the needs of all people, unless your primary use is limited to fishing. It’s the right size, not too big, but lots of room; it’s got the 4.3 V6 which is the best engine for power-to-weight and reasonable fuel consumption. So... why didn’t it sell?

Also, that transom mounted tilt switch is totally underrated. I’m not kidding, it’s amazing when you go to service it, or adjust the drive on the trailer, and you don’t have to climb up into the boat to do it.

my snowmobile was sitting for 2 years, checked the fluids and gave it fresh gas. Started up no problem. let it idle for a few minutes, checked fluids again, greased places that should be greased, then took off like i was riding it before.

I did prepare it before storing it with fuel stabilizer and fogging oil,

I’m sure the factory uses fuel with stabilizer added.

Boats really like to break a lot when they aren’t doing anything.

I don’t know why they didn’t/couldn’t move it. The only thing I can think of is that it’s a very small market and people don’t want to ship a boat when you can get something local. It on the edge of the range I would drive to get a boat, too many closer options.

lol WTF?? what are you going to do, put wheels on it and drive it around? where would you use a boat. It looks like there is nothing more than a couple puddles near that.

do boats have warranties?

Yes, but is isn’t as comprehensive as a car warranty. This particular boat comes with 5 years on the hull, 3 years on the hull finish, 1 year general warranty not to exceed two years from date of manufacture. This boat is most likely at the end of any factory warranty.

We bought our boat new in July of 97 as a 95 model year holdover with no problems or issues. On it, the general, powertrain and hull warranties started at the date of sale, however Stingray may work differently than Larson did in 97.

General warranty ends two years from manufacture. Not too worried about the hull and structure. Don’t know on the motor/outdrive.

FYI, I’ve always liked the idea of Stingrays. If you get it, I’d love to know how you end up liking it over the long term.

with cars at least, warranties don’t start until the car has been registered, either by the dealership or owner

Look up the cost of a used one of same model year. Use that as your starting price point.

It’s still under warranty right?

Trailer tires are oddly resilient.

GO FOR IT!

If not, where is this boat?

The few I’ve found show the dealer is only a little above them. Few and far between though, not many people getting rid of 2 year old boats. Depreciation is the biggest at that point.

I believe the warranty will run out before the end of the summer. You can’t have it. I called dibs.

Stingrays have a decent niche in the market. Nothing fancy in terms of the materials, fit/finish, but not as bad as a Bayliner. The engine/outdrive are the same as any other boat, so the really important stuff is not a concern. They offer pretty good value if you just want “a boat.”

Kinja'd!!! functionoverfashion > Future next gen S2000 owner

Any price they offer, I’d require them to include a spring service - oil change, gear oil change, fuel filter, a new battery, and a good long test drive. If that all checks out, go for it.

Lots of times, we’d have customers who stored boats at the marina over a winter, then didn’t make it up the following summer, or maybe more than that. With proper treatment, there’s no reason it couldn’t work perfectly fine after sitting for a year, two, or three - especially starting at new.

My only concern was some other unknown thing that kept it from selling.... but I can’t really come up with anything beyond what you said.

Yeah, but this one is new. See my comment above, if you can - but basically, we used to have customers leave boats in storage with us for years at a time, for various reasons - and these weren’t new boats. Most of the time, they’d get a standard service and a bit more, then be fine. Sometimes they’d have a seized steering cable, or bad fuel, something like that. All easily addressed with a good once-over and a thorough test ride.

That and a dealership warranty, at least a year. May never need it but would be worth the hassle to bringing it up to them.

We had a lot of customers with Stingrays, they were totally boring but also never had weird issues. I’ve driven a bunch of them, too, and they all seemed pretty solid. I’d recommend one to anyone looking for a solid boat that isn’t overpriced and won’t look outdated in 3 years. And definitely get the 4.3 with an Alpha drive

It’s an inboar/outboard from the look s of things. I’d say the actual motor will likely be okay what would concern me more is the outdrive. Those are from experience far more prone to breakage and general failure from lack of maintenance than the actual motor.

I’ve always heard good things about the 4.3, but have never driven a boat with that engine. We skipped from 15 and 19ft boats with outboards to the current one with a 7.4l/bravo 3 combo. That now 20+ year old bravo 3 has been an impressive drive.

Kinja'd!!! functionoverfashion > ITA97, now with more Jag @ opposite-lock.com

Kinja'd!!!0

The 4.3 is the sweet spot for a ~20' boat to be able to comfortably plane with 6-7 people, or pull a waterskier, but not be super thirsty. Most of the 5.0-powered boats of the same size don’t perform any better due to the added weight of the 5.0 sitting all the way in the stern, without a lot more power. The 3.0 liter 4-cyl is a rugged, proven engine, but just doesn’t have the grunt of the 4.3. It was also known by the marina staff as the Shake N Bake engine. It’s not the smoothest at idle, despite the inline layout.

If you’re going all the way up to a 5.7 or bigger, now the 4.3 isn’t as competitive; it’s just that an 18' boat doesn’t need a 5.7 unless you just like burning fuel; or always have a ton of people on board.

I’ve experienced the shake and bake. I’ve rented a small 17ish foot boat or two on vacation with the 3.0. They were horrendously under powered, but that may also be influenced by our boat topping out at ~55mph and accelerating faster to 50mph than some cars I’ve owned.

Also, this is reminding me that it is about time to order parts and plan when I’ll do the annual maintenance on it to get it back in the slip within the next month or so.

haha yup, tough to go from a 7.4 to the shake and bake.

Indeed, that reminds me that I forgot to order some stuff while it was on sale! I’m still close with the marina where I worked, they usually give me reasonable prices on things.

Man.. OOF that price. I remember when I bought mine new off the showroom floor. 1995 Rinker 19ft for 14k with trailer. I know for a fact I am not making 3 times what I was 23 years ago. Not even a full 2x.

The amount they want for boats nowadays are a hard pill to swallow. Especially when they have pretty close to the same tech for the last 20 years and only a material cost increase shouldn’t justify that much markup.

My quote is no where near MSRP. 18' bow riders come in at the low-mid 30's depending on options.

Miss my boat all the time, sold it around 10 years ago. I’m lucky enough a buddy of mine bought a boat that won’t fit in his garage and i happened to have a 2 car shop that it would fit in. He leaves it there and let’s me take it out whenever I want. I’ve taken it out twice w/o him but not w/o asking if he wanted to go first. I’d prefer not to take it w/o him but I’ve been around boats since I could walk and have given him some good advice from what I’ve learned.
